UK FPTP (first past the post) electoral system vulnerabilities. Electoral Calculus is a well-regarded polling / MRP outfit in the UK. The image is their latest prediction of the most likely outcomes of the upcoming GE. It has the Tories on 23% of the vote, with a central prediction of 66 seats out of 650 (so about 10%) but with a massive range of uncertainty - anywhere between 37 and 225 of the seats. The fact that it's potentially so volatile, in terms of seat outcome, is apparently based on uncertainty as to the precise impact of Reform UK (Farage)'s 12% on sapping the Conservative vote. While in some ways I wouldn't exactly weep at a Conservative wipeout, the fact that the difference in seat outcome is *so much* more volatile than the likely overall % changes does seem to illustrate the vulnerability of FPTP as a voting system. Whichever party it is, I don't think one party winning 519 seats out of 650 on around half of the vote is a good outcome in a Parliamentary system, especially not the 'winner takes all' version which we have in the UK. This sort of system weaknesshas long been ignored when the two main parties still have representation in the 100s of seats, as it's only affected the 'lesser' parties and the two big ones seem to long for complete power without the tedium of coalition. I wrote a piece a while back noting that we've seen in microcosm already where things could end up, in the form of 2015 general election in Scotland, in which the SNP won over 90% (56 out of 59) Scottish seats in the House of Commons on just under 50% of the vote. Fortunately the existence of the Scottish Parliament and its proportional representation system kept the other parties alive and able to recover. But there won't be that safeguard in this case. And yes, of course the big parties are themselves coalitions in a certain sense, but privateish debates within Labour or Conservative factions are no substitute for public debates fronted by different parties, whatever one may think of the quality sometimes. I couldn't help noticing that the debate about UK Capital Gains Tax has been based around first time founders (who don't care about tax) and investors (who may or may not care about tax). Missing from the debate are serial founders. It's a significant blind spot because they are a very important part of creating a self-sustaining (tech) startup culture. It seems that in the general imagination, startup life is like this: 1. Have a great idea 2. Work hard at it 3. Make millions 4. Retire and get a yacht Reality is a lot more messy and convoluted than that. I'd bet that the vast majority of founders don't follow this path. So I hope that the narrative gets wiser to the nuances of the startup sector; I'd love to see the UK building a more self-sustaining tech startup sector. With the UK general election coming soon, it's quite startling how embedded age has become as a key factor in voting intentions (albeit one that plays out within the context of the other variations within each constituency). One important factor in UK elections has been that older people are much more likely to vote than younger. Recent legislation has also introduced requirements which have been criticised in some quarters as likely to suppress younger voters. The Electoral Commission's research indicates that in 2022 only 60% of 18-19 year olds and 74% of 25-34 year olds were even registered to vote, as opposed to 96% of people over 65 - https://lnkd.in/eFaGpfqN Footnote for anyone not familiar with the minor UK parties - -- Lib Dems are centrists. They're the rump of what used to be one of the two dominant parties until about a century ago, merged in the late twentieth century with some centrist splittists from the Labour party. Seemingly in a permanent state of too strong to die, too weak to win. -- SNP are the main Scottish independence party. All-conquering for over a decade north of the border but more threatened by Labour now. -- 'Greens' covers - I assume - the separate Green parties of England & Wales / Scotland. -- 'Others' presumably mainly lumps together the Welsh independence party (Plaid Cymru), some SNP splittists (Alba) and various Northern Ireland parties. -- Reform UK Party Limited is a right wing nationalist company (see https://lnkd.in/eVsbsEts) controlled by Nigel Farage. It's the latest incarnation of what has previously been known as UKIP (UK Independence Party) and the Brexit Party. Similar vibe to the VVD in NL, AfD in Germany, RN in France, FdI in Italy, Fidesz in Hungary, the modern GOP in the US and such like. -- Last time we had a general election in 2019, Farage's previous vehicle was similarly threatening to take votes off the Conservatives, but he stood down his people at the last minute and the Conservatives sailed home. He's said he won't be doing that again. We'll see.

Norfolk fintech sector could be worth £100m – but funding remains ‘limited'. ❗️ The East of England county is home to 24 fintech companies that have collectively raised £49m in investment, a report commissioned by advocacy group Tech East has found. It found that Norwich, the largest city in Norfolk, is the main driver of economic and fintech growth in the county. 💬 The Payment Systems Regulator has published its response to a call for views on the expansion of variable recurring payments (VRPs) in the UK, citing key areas such as a multilateral agreement, mandated participation and pricing.
