This TechCrunch article highlights 13.5 million hours in the NHS lost due to poor IT systems. I can certainly echo that issue with my recent experiences that show a fractured and ineffective use of IT and poor IT policies. (I won't bore you with the details, but ask me directly if you want to know). I believe that better IT could be a massive opportunity for the NHS. Yes, it would mean spending to save, but there's a significant opportunity to empower individuals, while eliminating much of the NHS bureaucracy and overheads. The greatest challenge ahead is two-fold. Firstly finding someone with the vision to transform NHS IT systems. Second, the ability to execute that vision without giving away massive, poorly structured and expensive contracts to the usual suspects. Would it be unreasonable for the NHS to create an internal start-up to develop new technology? Developers in Silicon Valley can create new companies with only a few millions in investment. So, should the government fund multiple skunkworks projects and see what falls out? "The Power of Tomorrow" is something I often think about. Most of the technologies we have now will only improve, in scale, speed and function. Of course, our usage of those technologies could accelerate a technological higher human purpose, or just lead to terminal enshittification, model collapse, overall platform decay. I couldn't help noticing that the debate about UK Capital Gains Tax has been based around first time founders (who don't care about tax) and investors (who may or may not care about tax). Missing from the debate are serial founders. It's a significant blind spot because they are a very important part of creating a self-sustaining (tech) startup culture. It seems that in the general imagination, startup life is like this: 1. Have a great idea 2. Work hard at it 3. Make millions 4. Retire and get a yacht Reality is a lot more messy and convoluted than that. I'd bet that the vast majority of founders don't follow this path. So I hope that the narrative gets wiser to the nuances of the startup sector; I'd love to see the UK building a more self-sustaining tech startup sector. Brain Man VR's user testing event at London's Digital Catapult on Wed 28th Aug 2024 is filling up fast! What's in it for them? - They will get a crash course in entrepreneurialism and how software companies use Agile Development to create VR games. - They will get to try the latest version of Pizza Maths. - They get to give invaluable feedback, which is taken very seriously, re: what is and isn't working (this will be used to plan the work we do over the course of September) In both the school testing and in home testing we've done so far, the first thing that kids say (4/5) when they put on a headset and find themselves in the Pizza Maths restaurant is: Wow! We spent a day with one of our customers yesterday, and there was a very clear increase in the volume of works that are more complex in nature. Products are acquisition gateways. A statement that has stuck with me this week after chatting with Martin from PeriscoPe this week. Did you know there is a difference between products that acquire customers and the products the customer actually purchases... Products that acquire customers are often featured in creatives and catch the attention of new customers. How do you identify them? Sort your ad creatives and look for trends in which ones acquire the most new customers. Products new customers actually purchase are often different to those highly featured across creatives. What's the secret to success in DTC? Buying small quantities of these products and going deep on the products new customers actually purchase. How do you do this? Segment your product assortment as follows: 🥇 Products featured in creatives that get views and clicks 🥈 Products that new customers purchase with high frequency 🥉 Products returning new customers purchase Now make sure you buy according to sell through not click data or you will end up with overstocks! Don't go out of stock of the products that sell or you will be losing revenue, profit and potentially market share...

Thought for the week after IBC. The scale of the amount of time, effort and money being expended by many organisations to maintain legacy technology and approaches to delivering content to consumers is incredible. Now if only those same organisations expended the same amount of time, effort and money on leaning into the new technologies and approaches to delivering content to consumers, they might actually survive beyond the next few years and in fact they might explode with a flourish to lead those areas and build new revenue streams that put what they have had recently into shadow. Managing strategic change is critical. I just wish more would realise that they need to do it. You know were we are...

A story as old as time... https://lnkd.in/eEX-5xWF Whether we like to believe it or not, training/upskilling at companies gets updated in waves. I don't believe or see companies/people operations/HR ignoring requests but rather searching for the right solutions, which takes time, and budget, just like other business functions. A "decent" upskilling program may stay decent for a while if it gets the job done, while some companies go from having nothing to world-class programs overnight. Bottom line: employees, managers, workforce - keep the requests coming, your company hears everything, and the great ones will take action to empower everyone. If you can't wait, I get it. Leave for a company that provides company-sponsored upskilling. #training #upskilling #learninganddevelopment #futureofwork
