*** 2024 GRANT FUNDING NOW OPEN *** Cornwall Women's Fund is now accepting applications for our 2024 grant funding! We aim to support community projects in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly supporting women’s mental health. For this round of funding projects with a focus on perinatal mental health will be given preferential consideration. In 2021, a team from Oxford University undertook in-depth research into the needs of women and girls across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. They considered existing research where it was available and interviewed charity and community leaders, and women from across the county to get a true picture of what really mattered to them and which areas it was difficult to find funding for. (Read the report here: https://bit.ly/3QLpgdv) One of the 4 key areas in their report “Understanding what matters to women and girls in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly” was women and girls mental health, identifying a particular lack of support for those accessing perinatal mental health services. Our Members have voted the area of Women and Girls Mental Health for our 2024 grant funding and we are now accepting applications. Today is Black Leaders Awareness Day! A day to celebrate the incredible contribution of Black leaders in business and to commit to dismantling barriers to progress for emerging Black leaders in business. Last week at the Empower launch event we were lucky enough to hear from three of this year’s Black Empower Role Models Tom Shropshire, Afua Kyei and Jo Ogunleye. They shared their personal stories with a room full of business leaders and advocates and their practical tips for driving inclusion for people of colour in business. I’m so grateful for leaders like Tom, Afua and Jo and want to use this day to give them a shoutout for being amazing business leaders and paving the way forward for others too! Some wisdom that they shared last week include: Tom: “Leadership is a choice.” Which is so important, as is choosing the way you lead. Are you inclusive in your leadership? Afua discussed the importance of self-belief in sustaining success and how believing strongly in her own capabilities and passion was crucial to her career progress. Jo expressed her commitment to visibility for members of her own community. Leveraging the platform and influence she has earned in her career to send the elevator back down for others. Black employees in business still face systemic barriers when it comes to attaining success in business. Allies, it’s vital that you use your platform and influence to enable Black employees to succeed. Some things that you can do: Sponsorship. Sponsorship is an effective intervention for advancing Black talent, but according to research by McKinsey, only 5% of up-and-coming Black employees succeed in winning sponsorship. Allies – promote equity in business my sponsoring your organisation’s emerging Black future leaders. Eradicate biases Do you know what your biases are and are you actively correcting these so that they don’t hold Black employees back? Whether it’s affinity bias or harmful stereotyping leaders must be questioning, unlearning and eradicating biases that hold Black leaders back. Education Are you clued up on the barriers that Black employees can face? Educate your organisation’s allies through trainings and workshops so that they build a base knowledge on the histories, local contexts and challenges Black communities can face to strength allyship within your workplace. Day 6 Update: Tributes: to one of my early work Mum's, EN, who passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. To my pal F, who told me recently that he has aggressive prostate cancer and has been given a prognosis of 2 - 3 years. To my friend, E, who has successfully fought off prostate cancer. You all inspire me. Cancer Fact: Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the world. But survival rates are improving for many types of cancer, thanks to improvements in cancer screening, treatment and prevention. Symptoms Signs and symptoms caused by cancer will vary depending on what part of the body is affected. Some general signs and symptoms associated with, but not specific to, cancer, include: Fatigue Lump or area of thickening that can be felt under the skin Weight changes, including unintended loss or gain Skin changes, such as yellowing, darkening or redness of the skin, sores that won't heal, or changes to existing moles Changes in bowel or bladder habits Persistent cough or trouble breathing Difficulty swallowing Hoarseness Persistent indigestion or discomfort after eating Persistent, unexplained muscle or joint pain Persistent, unexplained fevers or night sweats Unexplained bleeding or bruising When to see a doctor Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any persistent signs or symptoms that concern you. Pleased to be quoted in People Management magazine today on Over half of business leaders report staff absence due to problems accessing public services, TUC reveals. More than half (59 per cent) of business leaders say staff have had to take time off in the last year because they struggled to access public services, a poll by the trade union congress (TUC) revealed. The survey of more than 500 business leaders further explored the specific challenges faced by employees, finding that more than a third (35 per cent) had staff absent from work due to delays in receiving hospital treatment. This is well worth a read if you are seeking grant funding. Some great tips here thank you Gill Pipkin. Writing bids is time consuming and so often pressured with short deadlines. So important to do the groundwork, be prepared, read the funding criteria carefully, write in simple terms and avoid jargon, tell your story of who you help, why and the difference you will make but make sure you are answering the question being asked! Take any opportunity to build a relationship with your funder. #charity #fundraising

Grateful to Gordon Brown for being a continuous champion for children and young people. We need all political parties to be more intentional in their plans to condemn and tackle rising child poverty in the UK. As he highlights, millions of British children have only known poverty and this has a life-long scarring impact on their education, career prospects, health, and wellbeing. Not to mention the damage on communities and our economy. Investing in school breakfasts (pioneered and evidenced by Magic Breakfast and our partner schools) is highlighted as one of the interventions that HM Treasury could choose to invest in. They could choose to remove hunger as a barrier to learning and to invest in our children's (and our country's) future prosperity and health. A worthwhile read for all policy makers because the scale of the challenge (and opportunity!) needs a bolder, sustained, and more strategic approach.

Interesting article in @Cityam today by Stephen Timms arguing for a partnership between government and the impact economy: https://lnkd.in/eEYekcwm He specifically calls for the creation of an Office for the Impact Economy, as a  a joint Treasury-Business and Trade unit; saying "We need a new partnership between Government and the impact economy, putting shared values into practice to build a more prosperous, equitable and sustainable future for all." Regardless of the result on Thursday, I hope that all parties will recognise the role that #SocialEnterprises and #Charities can and must play to unlock capital in order to tackle some of our most complex social challenges.

So thrilled to see coverage in The Guardian of our report into the low level of social mobility across many charities. The findings should be a wakeup call for everyone working in the sector.   This a moment when we must take decisive action to achieve a step change in socioeconomic diversity. Only by making it an urgent priority can leaders ensure there are clear pathways into charity roles for young people from across the communities we work within.   By expanding the talent pool from which we recruit, we will reflect the experiences, skills, knowledge, and passion to make a difference amongst young people whose background better reflects the diversity of society.    This is a challenging ambition, especially for small organisations that often lack the resource to change the way we recruit. But huge progress is possible if we come together as a sector to learn from – and support – each other.   At the EY Foundation I know we have much to do, but I know too that progress will be much slower if we act alone. An immediate action we’d really appreciate support with is to take this survey, which will help identify the early talent pathways currently available in the sector: https://lnkd.in/eui3g7nE.   And if you share my passion to change the situation we face today, please get in touch. This says "The 2024 General Election brought 335 new MPs into the House of Commons. For the many charities that seek to influence parliamentarians, this creates a significant challenge. That’s 335 new MPs to research and sift through to try and understand if they might be inclined to support a charity’s cause. "Many small charities cannot afford parliamentary monitoring systems or expensive agencies to do that sifting for them. If hundreds of organisations all undertake the same research into those MPs’ backgrounds, it means massive amounts of duplication and wasted time for already time-starved organisations. DEADLINE EXTENDED: To the 14th June 2024 Synergi Projects focuses on the intersection between racial justice and mental health, distress or trauma, and connects activists and organisers into a network to shift power and resources to grassroots groups. This is the purpose of the Small Grants Fund - to Democratise Policy - supporting groups led by and for those racialised as BPoC, that have been harmed by/work on: The mental health system Disability justice Racial justice Prisons & Policing (including Forensic mental health settings) The Immigration System and Detention centres Funding is for up to £5,000 and eligible groups must be engaged in activities related to: Tackling the root causes of mental ill-health, trauma, and distress for communities of colour, through campaigning, community organising, change-making; And/or by building radical community-based alternatives to healing, mental health and wellbeing. And/or ‘non-reformist’ reforms of current statutory state services as a stepping stone towards an abolitionary approach. For example, scrapping programmes that target specific communities e.g. Prevent. The aim is for the funding to reach communities experiencing the most extreme forms of discrimination and injustice, so we are specifically encouraging applications from groups led by and for: Disabled Communities Muslim Communities Trans and Non-Binary Communities Refugees and/or people seeking asylum Black Communities (we will ringfence 50% of the funding for these groups) Eligible groups must have a yearly income of under £50k, and our fund is also open to Unregistered Groups (i.e. groups not formally registered with Companies House or the Charity Commission).   Applications close at 5pm on 14th June 2024. https://lnkd.in/eaT3YknP Debbie Solomon (She/Her)

Please support me to Race the Dark! I'm daring to race the setting sun and help light the way to a safer world for women. As you know I'm leaving White Ribbon UK in January 2025 after nearly 7 years as its CEO. Before I leave. I'm taking on the big challenge of White Ribbon UK Race the Dark to make every step count for women's safety. On one of the shortest days of the year I'll leave Leeds Railway Station at dawn, dashing along the towpath of the Leeds Liverpool Canal to Saltaire and racing back hoping to make it to Leeds Railway Station before it gets dark. It's' about a marathon distance. I'm taking on this challenge: - For Women’s Safety: Women face unique challenges when it comes to their safety. - For Allyship: Race the Dark isn’t just about completing a challenge—it’s about reflecting on how we can all be better allies, encouraging conversations around respect, understanding, and standing up against harassment. - For Awareness Raising: Directly contributing to White Ribbon UK’s work, advocating for safer environments, enabling people and especially men to learn about allyship, and creating resources for use in schools, workplaces and other settings. https://lnkd.in/eihx27GC
