How will AI transform the business travel sector? BCD's Joanna Greenfield shared where AI can really make an impact on TMCs and their customers in a panel session at The BTA’s autumn conference in Gibraltar. Here are just some of the panel‘s takeaways: 💡 Generative AI’s ability to mirror human intelligence means it could transform both back-end processes and customer experiences. 💡 Generative AI removes the need for entry-level admin jobs, making it easier and quicker to train new entrants to deal with travel requests – which in turn will help drive recruitment and retention of people into the industry. 💡 In response to the increasing number of AI related questions in RFPs Joanna said: “As travel management companies, we need to make sure that our clients understand that it’s the value TMCs put behind the AI automation that will drive benefits, not the technology itself.” 💡 The current challenge is data ownership. As a DMC, local operator or accommodation looking to be promoted by your B2B clients your main focus must be to make it easy for your Tour Operator and Travel Agents to sell you. One of the simplest errors I see suppliers make time after time is providing information in PDFs and other forms of documentation that cannot be easily cut and pasted and without easy access to copyright-free images. When working on my agency "Curious Travel" I often stop putting a supplier's product on my website or social media if it is too much like hard work. I run a business helping hotels increase direct bookings. But I am NOT anti-OTAs Is that counter-intuitive? Yes (one of our value propositions is literally "reducing OTA dependency") But I know the industry well enough that they aren't completely bad They just have too much of a hold over most properties There's almost a golden handcuff-like situation, almost Stockholm syndrome-esque I strongly believe they are a tool for good, and therefore should be leveraged, but with dependency gradually reduced. Ultimately, they are a traffic source, one of which you can literally USE for you to increase direct bookings.

It was a pretty tough year for airlines in 2024 as they navigated a lot of disruption with increase in demand.
