🌍 Call for Input: "Climate Justice, Sustainability, and the Right to Development" 🌱 We are excited to announce a Call for Inputs for the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development (#EMRTD) study titled "#ClimateJustice, #Sustainability, and the Right to #Development." This initiative seeks diverse insights to inform a critical thematic study addressing the intersection of climate justice, sustainability, and the right to development. 📅 Deadline: February 2025 🔍 Purpose: Your contributions will help shape strategies and best practices to uphold the Right to Development (RTD) within the frameworks of climate justice and sustainability. Selected inputs will be independently published in Nexus Reports and included in GCRI’s submissions to the Office of the High Commissioner for #HumanRights. 🎯 Objectives: Embed climate justice into national and multilateral negotiations. Reform climate initiatives to enhance equity and sustainability. Address gaps in mechanisms like the Loss and Damage Mechanism. Foster global solidarity beyond the Global North-South divide. Align climate actions with RTD principles of participation, equity, and resource distribution. ❓ Key Questions: - How can #ClimateJustice be systematically integrated into national and multilateral climate negotiation processes to ensure fair and inclusive outcomes? - What reforms are needed to strengthen climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives to promote equity and sustainability effectively? - What are the primary limitations and gaps in existing mechanisms, such as the Loss and Damage Mechanism, and how can these gaps be addressed to uphold climate justice? - How can the principle of self-determination and sovereignty over natural resources be respected and operationalized in global climate action? - In what ways can the RTD principles of equality of development opportunities and equitable resource distribution be operationalized within international climate negotiations and policies? - How can international trade policies, technology transfer frameworks, and development financing be restructured to align with climate justice and sustainable development goals? - What strategies can be employed to foster greater trust and cooperation among states to overcome the Global North-South divide in climate negotiations? - How can accountability mechanisms be enhanced to ensure that states and other actors adhere to commitments aligned with climate justice principles? - What examples of good practices or successful initiatives illustrate the integration of RTD principles into climate action, and how can these be scaled or replicated? 🔗 Submission email: [email protected] 🔗 Submission link: https://lnkd.in/gnjDa4y2 Your expertise is crucial in advancing climate justice and #SustainableDevelopment. Together, we can ensure equitable and resilient #ClimateAction for all.

🌍 Innovation for All: Bridging Academia, Sustainability, and Real-World Impact As part of Sustainability Innovation Week 2024 at COP16Riyadh, #SaudiArabia, The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) proudly participated in shaping the global dialogue on sustainable innovation. One of the most impactful sessions was the Panel Discussion – Technology Transfer Offices: Catalysts for Innovation and Impact, featuring Dr. Chris McLarnon, Board Member and Trustee at GCRI. Dr. McLarnon delivered a powerful message about the urgent need to bridge the gap between academic R&D and the real-world needs of underserved and marginalized communities. While academia generates groundbreaking solutions for sustainability, these innovations often fail to reach the populations that need them most. Key Insights: 🌱 Empowering Underserved Communities: Dr. McLarnon emphasized the need for human-centered #innovation systems that prioritize accessibility and equity. Marginalized communities, often on the frontlines of #climate crises, must benefit directly from advances in #technology and #research. 📊 Redefining Success in Technology Transfer: The role of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) needs to evolve. Instead of focusing solely on revenue generation, TTOs must measure success by the global impact of the solutions they facilitate—especially in addressing critical challenges like #food and #water #security in vulnerable regions. 🤝 Fostering Global Collaboration: To overcome barriers between research and implementation, cross-sector partnerships are essential. Dr. McLarnon highlighted the need for #academia, #industry, #governments, and NGOs to work together to align research priorities with real-world needs. 🚚 Overcoming the Last-Mile Challenge: Many groundbreaking innovations fail to reach those in need due to systemic barriers like #infrastructure gaps, lack of #funding, and inadequate knowledge-sharing platforms. Dr. McLarnon advocated for #investment in #last-mile delivery mechanisms to bring solutions to underserved communities. 🌏 Sustainability Through Inclusion: Ensuring equitable access to innovations not only addresses critical #sustainability challenges but also fosters #resilience and #globalsolidarity in the face of shared #EnvironmentalRisks. 📢 A Call to Action: The session reaffirmed the importance of bridging silos and turning ideas into action for a sustainable and inclusive tomorrow. By aligning academic R&D with the needs of marginalized communities and fostering collaboration across sectors, we can create transformative, scalable solutions that leave no one behind. We are inspired by the leadership and vision of Dr. McLarnon and the broader #COP16 community. Let’s continue to drive innovation that serves #humanity and the #planet, ensuring a future where sustainability is truly for all. #COP16 #Sustainability #GCRI #Innovation #Technology #ClimateAction #EarlyWarningsForAll #DRR #SaudiArabia #Saudi #KSA

Extreme weather causes a rise in violence against women by their partners. But not all hazards do so in the same way. ♀️ Heatwaves were linked to immediate physiological effects, leading to aggression and violence. Storms or floods, on the other hand, take time to impact mental health and food security in ways that drive longer-term violent behaviour, according to SciDev.Net researchers. Violence against women and girls can and must be prevented. We need to reduce disaster risks – and the associated risks of violence against women and girls. 💪 ➡️ https://ow.ly/uXUL50UfZHm #NoExcuse
