At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This is our DRR wishlist for 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣5️⃣:
📢 More progress on multi-hazard early warning systems
👨👩👦 Those most at-risk being placed at the centre
🫶 Action to tackle poverty, inequality, and discrimination
🌏 A global commitment to climate mitigation and adaptation
🛖 Communities to lead the way in local DRR efforts
💡 Everyone coming together to share their knowledge.
🏗️ Investments in resilient infrastructure

We need to protect women and children during disasters and other emergencies - one proven approach is through truly inclusive planning and disaster risk reduction processes.
#SendaiGAP
Conflicts, disasters and humanitarian crises impact women, girls, boys and men differently.
Women and children face unique challenges in emergencies - including increased violence and compromised access to vital health services.
The World Health Organization is working to make critical health services available to everyone caught up in crises, taking into account the unique needs of the most vulnerable populations. https://lnkd.in/gqSf9JaQ
Systems driven by machine learning can be transformative technologies to drive impactful change in the face of climate change. 🌱
These examples, from the Amazon rainforests, the Caribbean, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Kenya, show how machine learning techniques are being applied to climate adaptation in 📢early warning systems, 🪵🌲forest resource management, 🚜 agrifood systems, and 📊risk assessments.

🌱"Nature, while often mistakenly vilified for disasters, is in fact an ally in the war against disasters," said UNDRR head & SRSG Kamal Kishore
"Indeed, the root cause of many disasters can be traced back to a disregard for the environment."
This publication from United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) & the G20 Working Group on DRR, 'Good Practices for Increasing the Application of Nature-Based Solutions and Ecosystem-Based Approaches for Disaster Risk Reduction', highlights the multiple benefits of nature-based solutions. It presents 16 specific examples offering concrete measures, methodologies and approaches that can be adapted to different national contexts.
🪸One of these cases studies (see video below) explains how the the innovative Mesoamerican Reef Insurance Programme combines ecosystem-based adaptation measures with climate risk financing and insurance, to offer some protection for the $12 billion / year tourism industry.
"Nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based DRR aim to[...] harness green and blue solutions to build resilience, complementing hard-gray infrastructure solutions. Moreover, these environmental solutions deliver additional benefits for the planet and people - from reversing environmental degradation to protecting biodiversity and delivering economic and social benefits, Mr. Kishore said.

Digitalisation and microfinance are having a transformative impact on climate resilience in Kenya. 📱💰
In this #DRRvoices blog post, Jacinta Kamemba explains how VisionFund International partners with a local fintech provider to empower farmers to access digital loans via mobile phones. Within hours of receiving a drought warning, farmers could borrow emergency funds to buy critical supplies – like water tanks – to protect their crops.
