As we approach the final decade before the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are to be achieved in 2030 a huge step-up is required on all fronts if the world is to achieve its targets and reverse the climate and species crises. Currently, about a quarter of the world’s land is degraded. Land restoration and rehabilitation together represent one of three primary strategies for achieving SDG 15 (Life on Land), and particularly for meeting the land degradation neutrality target under that goal (15.3). This International Resource Panel (IRP) think piece highlights that both the process of land restoration and rehabilitation, and the restored land, have tremendous potential to help the world limit climate change and achieve its aims for sustainable development. The think piece provides diverse reflections for policymakers, academics and practitioners for the development of strategies to maximize the co-benefits of land restoration and rehabilitation for life on land by highlighting the risks, trade-offs and costs of land restoration and rehabilitation for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its associated goals. It strongly recommends a systemic analysis, before investment is made, to avoid unintended consequences. The think piece provides a clear strategy to maximize cross-cutting opportunities for land restoration or rehabilitation across multiple SDGs. The observations and conclusions provided by the 37 authors, while by no means exhaustive, provide hope and aspirations for investments in land restoration and rehabilitation across the globe. I am thrilled to share that I have recently completed the micro course on "Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Development" offered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This comprehensive course has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to effectively integrate nature-based solutions into various sectors, particularly water management and climate change mitigation. Through this course, I gained a deeper understanding of: 1. Defining Nature-Based Solutions: I now have a clear grasp of what nature-based solutions entail and how they can be applied to address pressing global challenges. 2. Examples and Contributions to SDGs: I can identify and analyze various examples of nature-based solutions and their significant contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 3. Integrating Nature-Based Solutions into National Water Plans: I am now equipped to identify the starting point for integrating nature-based solutions into national water plans, ensuring more sustainable and resilient water management practices. 4. Enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): I understand how nature-based solutions can improve countries' NDCs, ultimately contributing to more effective climate change mitigation efforts. 5. Case Studies from Around the World: I have gained valuable insights from real-world examples of nature-based solutions from multiple countries, which will serve as a valuable reference for my future work. The course covered three key lessons: 1. Introduction to Nature-Based Solutions: I learned about the fundamental principles and applications of nature-based solutions. 2. Nature-Based Solutions and Water: I explored the role of nature-based solutions in improving water management and ensuring sustainable water resources. 3. Nature-Based Solutions and Climate Change: I gained insights into how nature-based solutions can be used to mitigate the impacts of climate change and enhance climate resilience. I am excited to apply the knowledge and skills gained from this course to drive positive change in my professional endeavors. I look forward to collaborating with like-minded professionals and contributing to the development of innovative, nature-based solutions that benefit our planet and its inhabitants. The Southeast Asia Partnership for Adaptation through Water (SEAPAW), which primarily focuses on strengthening water resilience as an approach to climate change adaptation, is the first such platform in the region. This partnership focuses on galvanizing action among stakeholders in support of a shared vision, fostering cross-border projects, and accelerating adaptation financing through public-private-philanthropic models. Professor Khoo Teng Chye, the director of NUS Cities and a practice professor with the College of Design and Engineering at the National University of Singapore, mentioned that water crisis is deeply intertwined with climate change. A collaborative effort with other countries is needed to resolve the water crisis. SEAPAW serves as a crucial foundation to mobilize stakeholders and leverage innovative policies to scale up water investments, access, resilience, and sustainability. #Water #SouthEastAsia #Asia #WaterCrisis #Singapore #Sustainability This content is jointly prepared by ripple2wave and ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face unique challenges due to their small size, dispersed populations, and remote locations. These factors create a complex landscape for addressing social, economic, and environmental issues. On 28 May 2024, the UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) launched the Blue and Green Islands Integrated Programme (BGI-IP) to support SIDS in enhancing their resiliency in the face of multiple global crises. How will this program help small islands in combating the severe impacts of climate change? 🗓️ On Thursday 10 October 2024, an IAM COMPACT study on the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) will be presented by our colleague Dirk-jan Van de Ven (BC3 - Basque Centre for Climate Change) at a half-day virtual event for 9 #HorizonEurope projects. The event is organised by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, together with the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) as part of the clustering event for projects in Cluster 5 Destination 1. Policy updates relevant to EC personnel will be the main focus, with an emphasis on the most recent scientific findings from initiatives that are relevant to the #COP andthe #EU #climatepolicy agenda. 💡 Our study: 🔹investigates the optimization of sector-specific #mitigation initiatives to meet the aims the #ParisAgreement targets while taking into account several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 🔹 assesses the impact of mitigation across various sectors (#energy, #industry, #transport, #AFOLU) on 5 SDG indicators: #foodsecurity, #health, #waterscarcity, #economicgrowth and terrestrial #biodiversity. 🔹employs integrated assessment models (#IAMs) to identify sector-specific trade-offs and synergies, demonstrating that deeper mitigation limits flexibility and often creates conflicts between SDG outcomes. 🎯 The results provide #policymakers with insights for prioritizing sectors to balance #climategoals with SDG targets. ⌛ Stay tuned for more! 🌐 Remember to check out our website regularly 👉 www.iam-compact.eu #iamcompact #climatechange #climatechangesolutions #energymodelling #climatechangemitigation #sustainablefutures
