Budget 2024 summary in less than 60 seconds! I always read budgets from the lens of what they have for startups, youths, employment, real estate for tenants and owners (as I founded @NestAway), NPS Pension (from the AutoSave side), fintech tax evasion, and money laundering for Finguine So here are they: 📌 New employees earning up to ₹1 lakh a month will get a one-time salary boost of up to ₹15,000 through EPFO. This helps 21 million youths invest in their skills. 📌 Employers will be reimbursed up to ₹3,000 for each new employee with a salary up to ₹1 lakh per month, for 2 years. This is expected to create 5 million new jobs. 📌 1 crore youths will have the chance to intern at 500 top companies over 5 years, earning ₹5,000 a month and a   ₹6,000 one-time bonus. 📌 Parents can contribute to a pension plan for their children, which will convert into a regular NPS account when the child turns 18, providing future financial security. 📌 The angel tax for investors in startups is being abolished, encouraging more investment in new businesses. 📌 Employers can now contribute up to 14% of an employee’s salary to their NPS account, up from 10%, reducing taxable salary and boosting retirement savings. 📌 Small errors in reporting foreign assets worth up to ₹20 lakh will no longer lead to penalties, easing management for NRIs. 📌 Rental income will now be taxed as ‘income from house property’ rather than ‘business profits’, potentially increasing taxes for those with multiple rental properties. Yesterday, I moderated a Salad Ventures panel in Singapore with top minds in Web3: Chris Sirise of Pixelmon/MON Protocol, Alex Svanevik of Nansen, and TN of Pendle. We discussed the secrets to building thriving Web3 communities. We began with Pudgy Penguins strategy of prioritising quality over quantity, fostering deep engagement and loyalty. Emotional connections and storytelling are key. Next, we tackled community airdrops. While they boost sentiment, they can attract freeloaders. The panel emphasised rewarding genuine participation and contributions to foster a committed user base. A heated debate followed on linear vs. performance-based airdrop vesting. The consensus was performance-based vesting, aligning incentives with the project’s success and promoting a healthier ecosystem. Reviving engagement after negative price action is challenging but possible with consistent communication, transparency, and delivering real value. Building trust and showcasing potential are crucial. Monetizing without appearing greedy involves providing value first and monetizing second. This approach builds genuine relationships and a sustainable revenue model. From an investment perspective, engagement over scale is vital. Last month we published a piece where we mapped the family offices investing into tech startups in Southeast Asia. While we got a good response from it, we found out there were other family offices out there that we had missed out on adding. So this is the updated piece. One thing I realized from this piece is that there is very little information on the family offices in the region. Many don't even have a digital presence. But our hope is to keep identifying these family offices and adding them to this map. We also realized that it isn't sufficient to just give out the names of the companies and websites to founders/VCs out there, so took it a step further to add a table that identifies the key decision makers in these family offices and what are their areas of interest to invest in. BUILDING ATHENA.VC IN PUBLIC DAY 4 So I’ve hit the wall with these daily vlog style videos and I need to change tactics. After getting a ton of positive response from Day 1 and 4,400 views Day 2’s views dropped to 1,900 views, that video shared the results of the Day 1 video on Linkedin, Tiktok, X, and Youtube shorts And the Day 3 video only got 1,300 views. That one was more tactical and educational - it was a tutorial on how I make these videos - so I thought it might do better but it didn’t. Looking at this chart I made, I’m seeing a downward trend so yeah I’m going to change things up. I will say Day 3 did the best on tiktok, it got 14 likes and 4 saves vs 3 likes and 0 saves so the educational content with relevant hashtags clearly works better. The really concerning thing is that the average watch time on that 60-second video is still only 7 seconds. So they’re clearly not providing enough value. Also these videos take about 3 to 4 hours each, that’s a lot of investment for diminishing returns. (Today’s video took 1.5 hours to make so that’s a step in the right direction.) I will keep posting every day but I’ll edit less so I can give myself more time to spend with the Athena founders themselves. I also want to start posting about the startup course itself, how it works. It’s definitely different, paying founders to innovate so I’ll go into that. Particularly in context of some of the work companies like Inveniam and LV8RLABS are doing to create a virtual data room instrumented day one of the project to birth the digital twin in concert with its real world sibling.

Are there any legit AI startups in Singapore? The obvious candidate is Reka AI, a legit AI Lab publishing LLMs, but it's a hybrid org with HQ in the US and a Singaporean co-founder. Does that count? One small lab does not an AI Hub make, so other opportunities I see are: OPPORTUNITY 1: SMALL LANGUAGE MODELS While the big AI labs get all the media attention, there is a very long tail of AI use cases out there if we just take the assumption that AI will be gradually become pervasive across all industries. This leaves room in small niches for startups to play a role in creating their own models. The other interesting niche is that of industry-specific datasets. One popular category already is medical datasets, where they have specific benchmarks that represent medical Q&A scenarios. I believe we’ll see many such industry and even use case-specific models in the years ahead. OPPORTUNITY 2: AI-NATIVE STARTUPS By now we have realized all startups must be AI startups. But what does that actually mean? To actually qualify as AI-native, you must integrate AI deeply into your products and services. AI cannot be just a feature. AI-native means going beyond the chat modality and rethinking the world around us from the perspective of digital intelligence. We will gradually see the face of the internet adapting to AI. What is AI-native search? Perplexity thinks they have the answer, but Google will contest that. We will see similar battles across social media, content, influencers, media, and so on. It’s likely the FAANG hegemony will be remade AI-native. At the same time, we will rewrite the rules for B2B. Already we’re seeing startups depart from the familiar SaaS stack of yesteryear. This market has traditionally been driven by Y-Combinator, whose built-in network effect often sees early adoption of hot new B2B technologies with alumni being the early adopters. Some interesting AI startups in Singapore: HyperGAI: The recipe is pretty common: the founder comes from a deep academic background in ML/AI, in this case, a professor no less. The chosen niche here is multi-modal models for edge devices. Basically models with a few billion parameters that can do useful things on your phone. Recursal AI: Recursal is similar to the India's Krutrim but focused on ASEAN languages on aiming to be a cost leader for smaller models. Perhaps more interestingly, these guys are leaning all the way into open-source. Not just releasing weights like Llama and X.ai but code and data, too. Resaro: The final mention leans more into our final theme of regulation and governance. Resaro isn’t your typical startup story, as they are incubated by Temasek directly. This does give them a better-than-average chance of establishing themselves as a safety leader across public and private sectors in Singapore. #aihub #singapore #aistartups #ainative

They have all recently invested in pre-revenue startups focused on RWAs and tokenization. And this is fantastic news. #𝐑𝐖𝐀 #𝐭𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝. However, to meet VCs interested in pre-revenue startups, you need to venture out of Switzerland. But why? A recent call with a U.S.-based VC who invested in a pre-revenue RWA venture alongside others for over $10M clarified the reason: "𝘞𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘦-𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬." #wow. Not in Switzerland. This VC was based in the United States. Both the VC and I agree that tokenization is broken. We know this because @curioinvest issued a tokenized bond in 2019. We endured the rigorous process of connecting multiple dots, learning a lot at a high cost. Imagine: I even obtained a certification in due diligence from a university in Liechtenstein. Amazing. The reality is that no project knows it all. To tokenize assets and unlock their liquidity, a project sponsor needs substantial help: Company setup, Legal, Technical infrastructure partner, Operations, Logistics, Fiat on-ramp... the list goes on and on. VCs recognize this and are beginning to align their investments accordingly. At CurioInvest, we know this well. We've built an RWA infrastructure that has grown both in terms of ecosystem partners—over 30—and project asset pipeline, which today exceeds $1B in RWAs. Our RWA modular ecosystem is fully functional and growing 10% organically month over month. When I interned for a European venture capital fund, we focused on startups with revenue—specifically, revenue north of $10M per year. Startups below $1M per year were out of scope, with no chance of a call. Zero revenue? Not an option for these VCs in 2024. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 For VCs, the signal is clear: investing in Swiss-based ventures opens an exceptional opportunity. Many of these ventures, including ours, feature revenue, strong traction, and more. For entrepreneurs, the message is straightforward: if you are pre-revenue, ranging from a napkin idea to a testnet invite-only stage, consider traveling abroad. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐞: Secure a lead, and the rest will follow. The reality is that VCs invest mainly, if not mostly, in tier 1 VC-backed ventures. By targeting your criteria, you increase your chances of getting funded.
