The Digit IPO is not just vital for the company but also a test of the Indian startup ecosystem, and something of a report card on the past three years. After PB Fintech, Nykaa and Paytm got their listings in November 2021, Go Digit is the next major new-age tech company going for an IPO. It’s been three years, and in that gap a lot has changed. Unicorns have largely delayed their IPOs, including the likes of OYO, boAT, Pine Labs and others, besides Digit. So many entrepreneurs and public markets investors would be watching the fate of Digit now, because it will give them a hint about how other IPOs might be received. Besides the insurance unicorn, other key public listings expected in 2024 include FirstCry, PayMate, Awfis, Mobikwik, Ola Electric and OYO, and Swiggy is expected to join this group by later this year. India’s Oyo, once valued at $10 billion, is finalizing new funding at a $2.5 billion valuation. This marks a steep decline from its $10 billion valuation in 2019. Indian Online Gaming Industry to get support from Foreign Investors! India is currently the largest gaming market in the world, boasting a user base of 568 million gamers and over 9.5 billion gaming app downloads in 2023. The sector in India has experienced an impressive growth trajectory, with a staggering 28% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) between FY20 and FY23. India has produced 3 gaming unicorns: Game24x7, Dream11 and Mobile Premier League (MPL). To encourage investments in this growing sector, Indian government is in talks with Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) considering allowing 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the online gaming sector (excluding betting and gambling). The aim is to simplify the process for Indian startups to raise foreign capital. This move has come as gaming sector has faced regulatory ambiguities and hefty tax demands. Questions have also risen for games like fantasy sports and rummy over whether these games qualify as games of skill or chance, as in betting and gambling. The gaming industry obviously welcomes this potential policy change, seeing it as an opportunity to attract more capital and expand and opening up opportunities for both real-money skill gaming and free-to-play games. This move would also reassure global investors about the supportive regulatory environment in India. However, a whopping 28% GST on this sector is proving to be a set back. With no consideration given to this during the budget session or council meeting, hopes for lowering of GST shatters the dream growth of the industry. In addition to expensive watches, motorcycles, and cars, having multiple credit cards with great benefits is something that the rising affluent class in India likes to collect and flaunt. 😄 In this episode of our Scale by Airtribe, I focus on the growth of credit cards in India and how they make money. 💸 At an estimated 3-5%, India is still in the early stages of credit card penetration, but that amounts to about 100 million credit cards in use. In April 2023, credit card usage in India exceeded that of debit cards. The transaction value of credit cards is nearly three times higher compared to that of debit cards even though there are ten times more debit cards in active use than credit cards! BharatPe was an underdog in the crowded offline payments space in 2019 but thanks to Karan Khanna, we managed to onboard lakhs of merchants rapidly. Merchants had many options for UPI accepting payments, so we kept merchants engaged by offering cashbacks on an ad hoc basis. These bumped up our transactions but their effect was short-lived and transactions dropped when the cashback stopped. It became clear that we needed an organised loyalty program to drive sustainable engagement. Enter BharatPe Runs, which quickly became a hit among our merchants. Our own currency to reward their loyalty was a success because of: 1. Inclusivity: We rewarded everyone, from paan-waalas and sabzi-waalas to big retail stores. 2. Gamification: The currency had a gamified nature, rewarding all merchant activities in the BharatPe app—from taking loans to buying insurance, and of course, accepting payments. The chase for milestones was the ultimate hook. 3. Recall & Gratitude: This 'earn and burn' model fostered a deep sense of gratitude as well as brand recall. Merchants appreciated us when they earned Runs and loved us even more when they redeemed Runs for goodies. BharatPe Runs laid the foundation for my journey in the world of Loyalty and Rewards. Buying gold / silver coins on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Trithiya come under low frequency - low complexity purchase category. It is a seasonal product bought generally during specific occasions. Zepto Blinkit Swiggy lapped up this opportunity and started selling this with the benefit of quick delivery. No wonder the sales picked up quite well. I wonder how much would it have impacted the sales of larger eComm players. Sales trends from swiggy is already out.
