  • Island vibes over winter chills this Christmas? Only at SJ Campus! We brought the festive cheer to the tropics with “Christmas in Our Garden”, a year-end celebration in the lush Tropical Grove at SJ Campus. This wasn’t just any holiday gathering—it was a tribute to the people who make SJ extraordinary. Our Group CEO Sean C.S. Chiao, FAIA set the tone with heartfelt gratitude for the dedication and resilience of our teams, while our Chief Technology Officer Keith Zecchini swapped his tech gear for a Santa outfit, spreading joy—and candy canes—with his infectious energy. Adding to the magic, the SJ Band, featuring talents from our legal, township, coastal engineering, and architecture teams, serenaded us with live carols, turning the garden into a festive wonderland. Beyond the festivities, the event celebrated unity, with shared laughter and cheers reflecting the camaraderie and teamwork that defined our achievements this year. It was also a moment to reflect on 2024 and look ahead to the opportunities awaiting us in 2025. Here’s to another extraordinary year for SJ! #YearendCelebration

  • What if our next design challenge began with a simple question: What can nature teach us? By observing ecosystems that have thrived over millennia, we can uncover solutions that are not only innovative but also efficient and sustainable. Nature, with its 3.8 billion years of evolution, holds answers to many of the challenges we face today, from natural cooling systems inspired by termite mounds to wind turbines made more efficient by whale fins. The philosophy of biomimicry encourages us to think bigger—moving from sustainable design to regenerative practices that actively restore and replenish ecosystems. At the recent Fortune #BrainstormDesign conference in Macau, Jamie Miller, SJ’s Director of Biomimicry, shared thought-provoking insights on how biomimicry can guide us in creating solutions that are both groundbreaking and restorative. As Jamie said, "Nature is naturally regenerative... What I love about biomimicry, and why it's so powerful is that these terms like circularity, regenerative design, passive design, nature's already done it, and biomimicry can inspire us to look at what can nature teach us to do next. Why can’t our buildings feed their ecosystem? Our breath feeds trees. Our bodies feed the soil. Biomimicry can inspire us to look at what nature can teach us to do next." At SJ, we are proud to harness the collective expertise of our teams to explore transformative ideas that harmonise creativity, efficiency, and restoration. By adopting principles like biomimicry, we bring together diverse specialists across disciplines to tackle complex challenges for our clients, reimagining the built environment and delivering greater value to communities and ecosystems alike. The journey toward a regenerative future starts with a bold question—and even bolder ideas. #RegenerativeDesign #Biomimicry

  • Trust and collaboration are changing the way construction projects are delivered worldwide.   At SJ, we’ve seen how collaborative contracting is transforming project delivery—not only in Singapore but in markets across the globe. By uniting project owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and suppliers under a shared vision, this approach shifts the focus from individual interests to common goals.   Our Director of Project and Contract Management (Asia), Max Shea, highlights the benefits: “Collaborative contracting fosters mutual trust and open communication. It encourages all parties to identify issues early and resolve them together, leading to better time and cost control while sharing risks more equitably.”   While collaborative contracting isn’t new to Singapore, it’s gaining traction with support from government guidelines and initiatives. Earlier this year, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) introduced the NEC4 contract framework to encourage its adoption. NEC4, already widely used in the UK, Hong Kong, and Australia, represents a significant shift from long-standing local standards like Public Sector Standard Conditions of Contract (PSSCOC), SIA, and REDAS.   The transition presents a steep learning curve for all stakeholders—owners, developers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers—due to the new terminologies and mechanisms it introduces.   Frameworks like Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) are excellent examples of collaborative contracting approaches. SJ has applied NEC4 contracts, which include subcontracts and design, build, and operate contracts, in ongoing residential projects, leveraging its collaborative mechanisms to enhance communication and mitigate risks across all phases, from design to facilities management.   However, challenges remain, especially in the private sector. As Max notes, “Private sector clients often face pressure to deliver projects on time to minimise profit or rental income loss. This can result in more onerous contractual requirements.” Balancing these pressures with the principles of collaborative contracting will require a significant mindset shift across the industry.   Through Threesixty Cost Management, SJ helps clients navigate this complexity by providing independent, efficient, and responsible cost and commercial management. From inception to completion, we ensure stakeholder interests are aligned, fostering better outcomes for all.   As the construction industry evolves, collaboration isn’t just a trend; it’s a necessity for building better outcomes globally. How is your region embracing this shift?   #CollaborativeContracting

Life has been a dance of many forms — from the rhythm of tango to the precision of motorsports, and the evolving landscape of architecture for Technical Executive (Architecture), Ahmad Tarmidzie (Zie). Zie’s journey at SJ started seven years ago as a BIM modeller, quickly becoming an integral part of the team. His knack for translating architectural concepts into precise digital models ensures projects move seamlessly from vision to reality. It’s a role requiring both technical expertise and adaptability — qualities Zie demonstrates in abundance. But outside the office, Zie’s life takes on a different rhythm. During a project at Singapore’s Esplanade, he discovered a passion for tango, eventually travelling to Argentina to master the dance. This fascination even led him to start a theatre company, sharing his love for tango with local audiences. Then there’s the thrill of speed — another surprising facet of Zie’s life. As an official with the Singapore Grand Prix recovery team, he plays a vital role in safely retrieving crashed vehicles from the track, sometimes while the race is still ongoing. The team’s dedication and precision earned them an award from the International Automobile Federation, recognising them as one of the top recovery teams in the world. But Zie doesn’t stop there. He also leads SJ’s cycling club, uniting colleagues for shared rides and fostering a strong sense of community. It’s this drive to embrace every opportunity — whether in music, motorsports, or cycling — that truly sets him apart. In his own words: “You only live once. So why not do it all?” Zie’s journey reflects the drive for excellence and a love for learning that lie at the heart of SJ — proving that the most impactful stories often go beyond the projects we build. #PeopleOfSJ
