Orlando Bloom Gushes Over Fiancée Katy Perry’s ‘Support’ of His Death-Defying Acts in New Show (Exclusive)

Orlando Bloom is appreciating his fiancée Katy Perry’s endless support, even as he takes on challenges that might strain some relationships. 

While speaking to PEOPLE about his new Peacock series Orlando Bloom: To The Edge (now streaming), The Lord of the Rings actor, 47, said his fiancée was supportive of all three extreme tasks he had to master for the show, even though they brought him “close to death,” he recalls. 

“She's a wonderful support,” Bloom tells PEOPLE of the “Firework” singer, 39. "She really holds me accountable, which I appreciate.”

“She forces me to be the best version of myself — which can be really annoying —  but it's normally super valuable,” he continues. “I think we both do that for each other. We definitely learn and grow through these things.”

In the three-part series, Bloom endures some of the most intense training he’s ever done in order to learn how to wingsuit, free dive, and rock climb in just a couple of weeks. 

He recalls Perry's initial reaction to the series: “It was something that I don't think she fully had thought through what I was doing. I think she just thought, ‘Well, there's insurance in place. There's things in place that he's not going to do anything that’s going to kill him.’ And of course, to some extent, that's true.”

During the first episode, Perry comes out to watch Bloom successfully complete his training for wingsuiting — a form of skydiving in a web-sleeved jumpsuit. She admits that watching her fiancé complete these difficult tasks did give her anxiety.

The Carnival Row actor shares, “I definitely felt that my life was in my hands at different moments through this process. And I think as she saw me come home from that, she was like, ‘Wait, what are we doing? You pulled a reserve chute. What does that mean?’ And suddenly the questions started coming in.”

Despite his fiancée’s concern, Bloom says that Perry understands he’s always been an adventurer from day one. The pair met in 2016 at a Golden Globes afterparty and later got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2019.  The pair welcomed their three-year-old daughter Daisy together in Aug. 2020, and Bloom also shares son Flynn, 13, with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.

“I think she also knew that that's how I live my life — a little bit in rhythm, seize the opportunities in front of me. Carpe Diem it or whatever,” he says. “I think she knew this was something that I'd chosen to do. And to her credit, it's something that she got on board with. I'm grateful we support one another.”
