Billy Bob Thornton and Connie Angland are stepping out for a rare date night.

The Sling Blade actor, 69, hit the red carpet premiere of his new show Landman on Nov. 12. Thornton, dressed in all black and a fedora, posed alongside Angland, 60, as he celebrated the launch of the western drama.

At the event, Thornton told PEOPLE what he hoped audiences took away from the new Taylor Sheridan drama, which follows those who seek to acquire wealth in the world of oil rigs.

"I hope they do learn something about a business that most people don't know the inside of," he said. "But I also hope that they take away the way that people in the face of intensity and danger, that there's still humor in life. And also, that they take away how relationships are affected by a business that you're in."

Angland is Thornton’s sixth wife and the two have been together for nearly 20 years. They met in 2003, shortly after his divorce from Angelina Jolie that same year.

The following year, in 2004, he and Angland welcomed a daughter named Bella. This was Thornton’s fourth child — he shares daughter Amanda Brumfield (née Thornton) with his first wife Melissa Lee Gatlin and sons William and Harry with Playboy model Pietra Dawn Cherniak

Thornton and the Men in Black actress didn’t tie the knot until after more than a decade of dating, finally marrying in October 2014. At the time, he told HuffPost Live that he didn’t know if the two would ever get married.

"Maybe there's something about the official nature of it — maybe it's once there's a paper signed or a door seems closed, then I turn into more of a caged lion or something," he said.

Around the same time, he told Oprah Winfrey on an episode of her Master Class podcast that after his high-profile relationship with Jolie, he decided to keep his personal life out of the public eye.

"When you're in a celebrity marriage … I had one of those periods, and during that time I found celebrity to be difficult just because of privacy issues," Thornton explained.

The Oscar winner added that he didn't necessarily see a need to marry Angland at the time but he was happy he did. "I'm in a good relationship now, I have been for 10 years," he said. "We have a beautiful daughter."

Aside from Angland and Jolie, Thornton was married to Gatlin from 1978 to 1980, Toni Lawrence from 1986 to 1988, Cynda Williams from 1990 to 1992 and Cherniak from 1993 to 1997. He was also previously engaged to Oscar winner Laura Dern, with whom he was in a relationship from 1997 to 1999.

In 2003, he told PEOPLE that his best marriage advice was to take things day-by-day.

"Go into it with the idea that you want it to last, but don't put pressure on yourself to try to achieve perfection every day, because I think that's when you get into trouble," Thornton advised. He added that brides and grooms should have the right mindset on their big day, explaining, "Like, 'Yeah, I'm doing this forever,' but don't let it freak you out."
