Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie‘s unique displays of affection made them seem like a perfect match for each other. However, the actor says they were always on different pages.

In the wake of Jolie’s high-profile split from Brad Pitt, Thornton opened up to GQ about their relationship, past and present.

Thornton, 61, revealed that although the duo married in 2000 after meeting on the set of the 1999 movie Pushing Tin, they had different interests — she was passionate about her involvement with the United Nations while he preferred relaxing at home watching sports — that made him feel inadequate.

“I never felt good enough for her,” he shared, adding that despite his many years in Hollywood, he’s “real uncomfortable around rich and important people.”

And he wasn’t looking to change his ways.

“I like how I am,” he said.

Despite their 2003 divorce, three months after she adopted her first child, Maddox, from Cambodia, Thornton says that he and Jolie still get along and chat every few months when they both find a spare moment in their busy schedules.

Thornton is now married to long-time partner and mother to his 12-year-old daughter Connie Angland, who understands and shares his preference for a low-key life.

Angland is Thornton’s sixth wife, but the actor explains that he didn’t marry her until after many years of dating because he didn’t want her to feel like just another number.

“I didn’t want her to be called number six. You know?” he said.
