There has been a lot of hype around the Rust programming language. Most articles and blogs I read are heavy on promises, and a little light on testing. I’ve done a simple comparison between a lambda written in Python vs the same lambda written in Rust. Both use the official AWS SDKs. Boto3 is well established but the Rust SDK is new. The official release was about 8 months ago at reinvent. I’ve load tested both using K6. Why? Well, because I want to see for myself if I really do get the 8x improvement in performance and equivalent reduction in cost that people promote. What were the results? My piece on forking open source software is in The New Stack today. Thanks to Dawn Foster Liz Rice and Stephen Walli for their input! A core tenant of open source software, is the ability to lift and shift the code, something that cannot happen in the proprietary software environment as the source isn't shared and available. But recently we've seen some major changes in forking. The Valkey fork may have confirmed that the community’s choice to fork is the perfect counter-attack to certain providers’ bait-and-switch approach to open source. Today, the community has some big players behind it. Perhaps in the future, companies will realize that open source is not a business model and think twice before open sourcing — if they are not in it for the long term. Open source isn’t a marketing tool. It’s for life. This is a big deal. Even more features you're used to with traditional databases, but with the performance and scalability of NoSQL. The hybrid NoSQL+Relational data modeling and schema capabilities, as well as the long-term vision for Fauna's database, are the number one reason I came to work at Fauna. My favorite part is you can add schema controls over time, as you need them. It's not an all-or-nothing addition.

Via Tania Duarte, this is the first **funded** call for art that I’ve seen pertaining to AI, with the end goal being “an opportunity for submitted images to be published under Creative Commons 4.0 licence in the Better Images of AI library.” The call for artwork is from ADAPT Centre, appears to be open to international creators, and closes October 20, 2024. Aotearoa AI Summit 2024 - Do we like this shiny tech? 🤔 🎤 Hon Judith Collins KC MP called us in attendance the “converted”, already bought in to the fact AI is set to and is already changing the professional landscape, driving economic growth and transforming industries. We the converted understand potential outcomes, wether its streamlining operations with automations to unlocking new revenue streams, AI does present unprecedented opportunities for businesses and countries alike. It’s no wonder that for the very few fortunate to be in these rooms/ echo chambers, the carrot being a potential 78 billion to Aotearoa’s GDP by 2038 is a goal to strive for 🥕💰 💡I also found myself with many intriguing aha moments and others that left me with a puzzled and concerned look 👀  ➡️ The keenness and drive from the Government by Hon Judith Collins KC MP with the new GovGPT pilot that will be able to query various govt websites - I guess is a "cheap" way to try normalise AI for the mass. But alas no new funding to support and encourage adoption of AI for businesses in comparison to our neighbours across the ditch 🦘👀 ➡️ Small win however with Callaghan Innovation and their AI Activator which can be a good starter for 10 for businesses looking to take their first steps with AI. 🤖 Other highlights were: 1️⃣ Agentic AI - a space that I personally find really fascinating lead by Being AI Group with David M. through interfaces and how data is going to be accessed - is it the possibility of API to API agent interaction? Imagine advanced single agent flows or multi-agent task solvers - going beyond a single simple LLM prompt call into sophisticated specialisation, personalisation and parralization. 
2️⃣ How AI is transforming the world of game development - discussed confidently by Dylan West from RocketWerkz and Ben Carnall from Omni Creator Products. Ranging from Ethical consent for game platforms in building trust with transparency around where AI is being used, to the "Raw materials" for inputs within AI and how AI can free up more time for creation of these artefacts for better uses. 3️⃣ Diversity call outs! A well curated discussion led by Louise Taylor where Shae Parsons, Kallol Dutta and Nick McDonnell shared strong sentiments of the importance of diversity and inclusion in AI development, which Shae doubled down in highlighting the need for Māori voices and diverse perspectives to be there at the table from the start. Which in other discussion with Dr Amanda J. Williamson and Enkhsaikhan Vicky shared similar concerns about data ownership and cultural integrity in AI development which seemed so easily glossed over by the perspectives of Judith collins with using Māori data 👀 The optimist in me hopes that events like this and the AI ecosystem overall continues to diversify and expand in the people, businesses, topics, use cases, and discourse soon so everyone has a chance to benefit from the 🥕🙏🏾

"AI tools were saving time, focusing on more important work and being more creative." - Microsoft Australia CTO, Sarah Carney The report suggest 200,000 Australian AI workers will be needed by 2030. “Growing the number of AI development jobs could be achieved by offering alternative entry-level pathways, opportunities for mid-career retraining and upskilling in AI, and drawing on skilled migration, particularly for highly technical roles requiring experience,” It was estimated the productivity gains would be worth $115bn to the Australian economy. In New Zealand we have a massive talent shortage for "AI Engineers", these people are not Data Scientists. They look more like Software Engineers with strong cloud & architecture skills, what puts Software Engineers off is the Math needed to understand AI systems, and what puts the Data Scientists off is implementing the software for production complex user facing systems. I think its likely this shortage will be filled by Software Engineers. - One knows about Math. - The other knows about Systems. (Data Engineers & Solutions Architect being the closet middle ground. ) How is your team AI upskilling tracking? Interested to know what type of person is moving towards this new role. Australia is facing a shortage of digital and tech skills and there is an ongoing need to build the tech workforce pipeline. The Tech Council supports the Government’s National Innovation Visa, which was announced in this year’s budget and aims to attract exceptional talent. However, International students play a key role in this effort too. Although we need to better understand how the policies will be implemented, as a general rule we forecast that we need to increase, not decrease, our skilled migration over the next five years to meet the Tech Council and Government’s joint goal of achieving 1.2 million tech jobs by 2030. To see the value and importance of international students to Australia you only have to look to Airwallex, which was founded by former international students in Melbourne and became a tech unicorn in four years. More than 60 per cent of Australia’s tertiary technology students are from overseas. The most likely educational pathway into tech jobs remains via university, with 62 per cent of workers holding a degree.
