We’re thrilled to be involved in safeguarding the Carillon Bell Tower at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington – a symbol of heritage, history, and resilience. As the third-largest carillon in the world, this architectural masterpiece houses an incredible 74 bells, ranging from a few kilograms to an impressive 12.5 tonnes. Built in 1932 and Heritage NZ Category 1-listed, the tower is now undergoing structural strengthening to 100% NBS (IL3). Our Holmes Aus & NZ Christchurch team has undertaken the strengthening design, working for Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage along with Studio Pacific Architecture and TSA Riley. The strengthening process involves installing new steel frames to the tower, which house fluid viscous dampers at the upper level. Recently, our project team visited the steel fabricator’s workshop to observe the observe the fabrication. With the first phase of steelwork fabrication underway, we’re excited to see this project come to life! Construction kicked off in mid-2024, with completion slated for December 2025. A huge shoutout to everyone involved Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Whakatiki Engineering, Studio Pacific Architecture, TSA Riley, Maycroft Construction 👏 #engineeringexcellence #heritagepreservation #structuralstrengthening
