Last week, RCP celebrated the formal opening of its offices in Vancouver, marking a significant milestone as RCP expands internationally.. “Vancouver is the ideal place for us to take our first international steps, with Canada and New Zealand both facing similar social and horizontal infrastructure challenges,” says RCP Executive Director, Cristean Monreal. “We are excited to bring RCP’s consultancy and leadership offering to a new market.” Hon Todd McClay, New Zealand's Minister for Trade, officially opened the new office. The opening event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with industry leaders and build new relationships in Canada. The opening ceremony began with a traditional welcome from Tsleil-Waututh First Nations Elected Councillor Charlene Aleck. In response to her acknowledgment, RCP were proud to offer a karakia, reflecting the shared values of our cultures. “We are proud to be partnering with leading Secwépemc knowledge holder Dr. Garry Gottfriedson, who is helping us grow our capability to engage with First Nations peoples,” says Bevan Judge, RCP’s Director of Canadian Operations. “We still have a lot to learn from First Nations peoples, but we feel we have built a genuine foundation to add real and immediate value in this area.” RCP British Columbia opened for business in April 2024, and was formally opened in November 2024, providing a strong foundation as we embark on this exciting new chapter in Canada. New Zealand has a long journey ahead to address the infrastructure challenges and opportunities we need to unlock economic prosperity for our country. It was great to have a chat with Under-Secretary Simon Court today about how the public and private sector can work together to address these and build a stronger Aotearoa.

As a country prone to earthquakes, Aotearoa New Zealand faces significant danger from unreinforced masonry (URM). The Kaikōura Earthquake of 2016 was a stark reminder of just how vulnerable our cities are, particularly Wellington, where many URM structures still stand unstrengthened. Despite further lessons learned from Christchurch’s devastation in 2011, many buildings remain unrepaired, leaving lives at risk. RCP's, Mike Jeffery, who was part of the critical response efforts after both the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake and Kaikōura, as well as supporting the response in Nepal, has a clear message: tomorrow is too late. Waiting for the next disaster will not only cost lives but also heritage and massive financial losses. This article is the first in a series that shares insights from those working on the front lines to address New Zealand’s earthquake-prone building stock. Read the full article below.

Our RCP Wellington team have been working with Wellington City Council on Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui | Wellington Central Library since Concept Design commencement in 2021. Last Saturday, they celebrated Whanāu Day hosted by LT McGuinness Ltd. This was a chance to recognise the wider communities that it takes to deliver major construction projects.
It's not often you can show your whanāu your workplace. Especially when it's a live construction environment. Last Saturday, LT McGuinness Ltd. hosted Whanāu Day at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui | Wellington Central Library, bringing together the families of those contributing to this landmark Wellington City Council seismic strengthening and refurbishment project. Excavators, candy floss, cranes, ice creams, flat-bed trucks, and freshly made falafel (thanks Ali) 🏗️🍦. The event celebrated the diverse teams it takes, working together to deliver major construction projects. With over 200 workers on-site daily, showing families where ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’ works truly brings this project to life. There is pride in this mahi. As construction progresses rapidly, we’re excited to reopen to the public in Q1 2026. A big shoutout to the incredible team making this possible: Wellington City Council, RCP, LT McGuinness Ltd. Athfield Architects Ltd, Aurecon (Services + Structure), NDY (Acoustics), Fire HQ Limited (Fire Engineering), Rider Levett Bucknall RLB (Quantity Surveyor), along with subcontractors MJH Structural Engineers, Ward Demolition Ltd, Aquaheat Facility Services Ltd, NME Group, and many more.

Working with council, iwi, and our delivery partners, the gallery has now been seismically strengthened, expanded, and cultural narratives are now woven throughout. #RCP #Community #Art #Whanganui
