Tencent Games has acquired a 51.4% controlling stake in Kuro Games, the makers of Wuthering Waves. This move involved the purchase of a 37.07% stake from HK Hero Entertainment, making Tencent the sole external shareholder in Kuro Games. With this acquisition, Hero Entertainment has completely divested its stake in Kuro Games. An internal memo from Kuro Games highlights Tencent’s commitment to maintaining the company’s independent operations. The approach aims to follow successful models employed by Riot Games and Supercell, emphasizing strategic autonomy. Hero Entertainment has been a key supporter of Kuro Games since 2018, contributing to the development of titles like Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves. Tencent began investing in Kuro Games more recently, holding a 14.33% stake in 2022. The remaining ownership structure prior to the acquisition included 48.59% held by Kuro’s founding team and 37.07% by HK Hero Entertainment. Kuro Games expressed optimism about the partnership, citing Tencent’s resources and expertise as key to ensuring stability and fostering long-term growth. With Tencent now holding a majority stake, the company anticipates further innovation and success, building on the momentum of Wuthering Waves’ acclaim.

🚀 Is Squad Busters going to hit $70 mil/month 😱 in IAP revenue after the global launch? I think Supercell would start with $250k/day and scale to $500k/1mil and then to $2mil/day based on actual numbers. We don’t know the payback or retention yet, but based on the retention profile from Supercell games, this can reach the current Brawl Stars scale—$70 mil/month IAP revenue. It was quite surprising to everybody when Supercell announced that Squad Busters is going GLOBAL! First of all, there is 0 chance this was decided on day 3 when it was announced. It was already decided before this game went to “soft launch.” This soft launch version is a marketing vehicle to build up hype and maybe fix some last technical issues. Esports getting Olympic recognition is a game-changer. We can expect a huge boost in mainstream acceptance, sponsorships, and investments, which will really elevate the global esports market. I feel this move will also help formalize the industry and provide a major push for local talents. It could be a moment as significant as what cricket did for India after winning the World Cup in 1983, or how rugby transformed in South Africa after their 1995 World Cup win, and even how soccer grew exponentially in the United States post the 1994 World Cup.
