In 2019 when we started IntrCity SmartBus - we recognized that we were operating in an environment - where the trust factor in the long distance bus travel industry in India had all the flavors of an unorganized sector. As we like to say amongst ourselves - travelers considered buses to be the 'second cousin of trains'. The bus industry had to demonstrate that it can be run professionally. Consumers also needed some benchmark data for their decision making. Looking at the projections over the coming years for domestic travel in India - it is now evident that we Indians will have to increasingly rely on road travel. So our core strategy in IntrCity SmartBus was to overcome these barriers for enhancing the adaption of buses for long distance travel across the country. We at IntrCity SmartBus have now become amongst very few travel brands across the world to publish our ongoing customer satisfaction data online on our web-site. You can now see how we performed over the last 5 years on our key promises. For us at IntrCity SmartBus, this activity is more than just brand building! To gain the trust of our customers - not only the essential part was to deliver a service of a very differentiated value - but also support this with standardization, consistent experience, technology and fulfillment of promises. In my opinion, one of the biggest tools in building trust is the commitment for fulfilling the promises made to the customers. And then being very transparent about it. This is why we have started openly publishing our customer satisfaction scores. We adopted 5 plain basic promises which any traveler deserves - 1) Clean bus 2) Safety focus 3) Being Punctual 4) Polite staff 5) Availability of essential amenities Every day we seek the feedback from thousands of guests. We share this information openly for all to see and we regard this open and transparent view of business and testament to how we perform. As we mark our 5th year of IntrCity SmartBus - we have now published a month-wise breakup how our guests rated us on the above promises over the years. I highly recommend watching this fantastic documentary on Aadhaar to every tech leader. Today we all are talking about India's leap in digital journey but without this project I think It would have been very difficult for us as country to achieve this leap. There are so many points in this documentary that I could relate with different projects I have executed in past and I am sure each one of you must have gone through similar situations. mentioning some point which we all can relate very easily with Tech/digital program in our organisation. 1) Establishing the need of Project. There were already multiple identities why to add one more with adhaar ? when we want to start any new challenging project we do get this questions from stakeholders isn't it ? 2) Team composition: The Aadhaar team was probably the first fully private sector team working on a government program. not a conventional team composition, isn't it ? some time we do need such unconventional team to take up challenge that can't be handled through much informed team members. you just need people with passion to put their 100% on idea. 3) Uniqueness and exception handling: Now this area according to me has to be pure technology expertise to design a solution that covers 90% of usecases, if not 100%. designing to cater to 100% coverage may not always be possible. Exception handling for Aadhaar solution design was to handle exception of people without hands, without iris we can't keep investing and try to make a solution that caters to 100%, it's a trad off that we all have to make in our projects. we all have made some tough choices 😉 4) Change of timelines: Projects which are no where in management consideration becomes over night critical for go live. something similar was visible with Aadhaar project when they had to launch with short notice. As tech leader I have personally seen many such moments, I am sure many of you also must have. 5) Street smartness: Funny situation of how Aadhaar project team could use safari suit as an attire to get access in difficult areas which they were not even able to get through their identity cards. while managing critical project street smartness is one of the critical attribute your team should have. you can't be simply following rule book to get all situations managed. 6) Change of champions: While we can deal with all smaller issues during project execution because we know that project sponsors and champions are there to support. but what happens if the core project sponsors is no more ? something similar happened with Aadhaar team when government changed. well such situations are really defining moments. if your project is solid enough and if your execution skills are not too much dependent on management support than I am sure even change of management will not impact your project. I would be happy to hear more points, do comment, as sharing knowledge will only increase it 😊

We are still in the early days of building “Intervuebox” at Manavritti, and while it’s exciting, the journey has already been filled with unexpected challenges. One particular moment stands out. My experience being a part of a full cycle in Business from inception to dilution of another niche advisory firm also brings an analogy to business Running a business is like running a marathon - The first 14 kms is about staying steadfast on the fundamentals - building the right culture, getting the right set of early employees, addressing the right problem & not get distracted - like hydration, nutrition, and the right pace (not over speeding) in a marathon The second 14 kms is about pushing through the tough parts, building confidence in investors, expanding the team and yet not diluting the culture - like pushing through the race, not overhydrating & keeping up the pace The last 14 kms is about getting to the objective of ensuring investor returns, building a brand and leaving a legacy - like the purpose in every race #fitness #business

Was at a KFC outlet in Bangalore recently and was surprised to see that all ordering is now on a self ordering kiosk(maybe I am lagging behind times a bit because its been a while since I've been to a fast food restaurant). And yet, the order fulfilment took a little longer than usual because of the huge rush at the counter! Self-service kiosks at fast-food chains have loomed as job killers since they were first rolled out 25 years ago. But nobody predicted what actually happened. Touchscreen kiosks have apparently added extra work for kitchen staff and pushed customers to order more food than they do at the cash register. The kiosks show the unintended consequences of technology in fast-food and retail settings, including self-checkout. On a lazy day, stumbled upon this masterpiece from the great Amitabh Bachchan on how to deal with life challenges and felt like sharing it here. According to him, if things don't happen according to your wish, it's even better. This is because they are happening according to the wish of some Divine force, and that Divine force will never think ill about you. So you have to respect that as being better. Life is a struggle, and as long as there is life, there is going to be struggle. If we accept this, we will be better prepared to deal with the challenges that come our way. We should not sit in despondency, but rather be aware that tomorrow is another day, which could be profitable or not, but eventually there will be another day when we can start trying all over again. The fear of those ugly moments recurring is perhaps what drives us every day.
