'GenAI is easier to say in the boardroom and difficult to get right for many SaaS companies'. When speaking to multiple technology providers, we have observed this as well. I will go further to suggest that many existing players will find it difficult to move to agentic workflows meaningfully. Beyond document summarization, and basic AI uses. The real problem is not technology. It is the company's DNA and processes, and a large installed base of customers. Going from building deterministic systems to building non-deterministic systems with high accuracy is a different skill set and hard to pivot to quickly. #aiagents #genai

Customers are no longer loyal to brands! Yes, with over 600 D2C brands in India, consumer behavior is evolving. Brands that prioritize pushing sales over creative engagement and problem-solving risk a short lifespan. ‘With growing consumption and gross domestic product (GDP) growth in India, the advertising market is projected to grow at a 9.4% CAGR from INR 1,01,000 crore in 2023 to INR 1,58,000 crore in 2028, which is 1.4x the global average. Most of this growth will come from digital front (internet advertising), which is expected to grow at a 15.6% CAGR, rising from INR 41,000 crore in 2023 to INR 85,000 crore in 2028. Internet advertising’s year-on-year growth, which was 26.0% in 2023, will remain in double digits throughout the forecast period (2024–28), and is expected to be 12.2% in 2028. Traditional TV advertising will grow at a 4.2% CAGR between 2023 to 2028, while global revenues are set to drop by -1.6%. India is poised to become the fourth-largest TV advertising market by 2026.’

Lessons a B2B SaaS #marketing Professional can learn from the results of the Indian General #elections 2024. Disclaimer: This is an attempt to do an objective analysis of the election outcomes, I'm not trying to support or oppose any political parties or their ideologies here. 1. The Narrative Always Wins In 2014, BJPs campaign slogan was "Ab ki baar Modi sarkaar" (This time, Modi's government). This was a brilliant tagline as it established the BJP as a scrappy underdog that was fighting against the powerful Congress establishment, asking for just one chance from the Indian public. In 2024, the slogan was "Ab ki baar 400 paar" (This time the BJP will get more than 400 seats). This was a disaster. After 10 years in power, it is now the BJP that is the big bad establishment and the Congress-led opposition that's the underdog. This tagline, while rhyming with the past campaign phonetically, was logically the opposite of the story the BJP was trying to tell. 2. Observing Your Opposition Matters While the BJP was campaigning with a poor tagline, the Congress was campaigning with a narrative that established the ruling party as "dictators", "tyrants", and "a threat to the very democracy of India". The BJP did precious little, handwaving the opposition away as irrelevant. Readers, your competitors are NEVER irrelevant! 3. Campaign's Real Performance Matters, Not Vanity Metrics The opposition led campaigns such as Bharat-Jodo Yatra and their manifesto were dismissed by the BJP, the media, and even most middle-class civilians (I'm guilty of this too) as abject failures due to their optics. Nobody realised that all of these campaigns were slowly chipping away at the ruling party's credibility and establishing the opposition as the real supporters of the poor and the downtrodden. The opposition's manifesto items such as "caste based census", "increasing reservations", and "wealth redistribution" resonated with the masses, especially in the Hindi belt. The BJP offered nothing immediately tangible to the masses in their manifesto. Their campaign focuses purely on GDP, infrastructure development, the inauguration of Ram mandir, all of these creating great optics but precious little support from the voters. 4. Never Ignore Your Strengths The BJP actually pulled off some amazing achievements in these elections. They won their first ever seat in history in Kerala, clean-sweeped an entire state, and increased their vote share in most parts of India. But despite all of this, they lost in their stronghold, Uttar Pradesh. 5. Success Is A Subjective Term 240 seats isn't a loss and 99 seats is no victory, but while outcome is a function of objective performance it is more a function of attainment against set objectives (you might want to read this twice). All in all, great elections. Many people lost, but democracy did win!

Shoppers today often blend physical and online experiences, browsing in-store and purchasing online or starting online and finalizing in-store, based on multiple factors like convenience, availability etc. Brands like Target and Best Buy come to mind—they’ve nailed the art of seamless shopping, allowing customers to browse online, buy in-store, or vice versa, with options like curbside pickup and same-day delivery. Both brands’ apps even let you check local availability and access product details, keeping the experience connected and hassle-free. the first few customers is the hardest part they say. Wait till you want to break into the mid-market league. Once you have strung the Self-serve, SMB and Mid-market chain, you will realise that the "first few enterprise customers" will be hardest part :) There is never an easy phase in company building. At each phase the challenges that you had in the previous stage becomes easier in the current stage. its like playing a game in easy-medium-hard mode, the problem is that there are cheat codes in games and none in company building. Yesterday, I had an insightful conversation with a VP of Customer Success from a well-known SaaS company based in Bangalore. We were discussing strategies around upsell and cross-sell, and she shared a fantastic example of the power of subtle nudges. Her team noticed one of their long-standing customers was steadily increasing their use of automation features—a strong indicator that they might benefit from more advanced capabilities. But rather than pushing an upsell directly, her CSM decided to take a softer approach. During a regular check-in, the CSM casually shared a success story about a similar customer who had upgraded and saw a significant boost in productivity. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝. 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡, 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐩. The CSM even highlighted a few specific premium features that would align with the customer's current growth phase, like advanced analytics and additional integrations. This was all done in a way that showed they understood the customer’s journey and were there to support it. The result? Within a quarter, the customer upgraded, excited by the potential impact on their operations. They even went on to explore cross-sell options in other areas. The VP and I both agreed: 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐥𝐞, 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞-𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬. Upselling and cross-selling don’t have to be about pushing products—it’s about helping customers realize the full potential of what’s available to them. Dhoni invests in startups like Khatabook , offering not just financial support but also mentorship. His belief in nurturing young entrepreneurs mirrors his on-field tactics of backing young cricketers, fostering growth and innovation. The “helicopter shot” is a testament to his ability to think outside the box. In the startup world, his investment in startups like 7InkBrews, a craft beer company, and HomeLane , an interior design platform, shows his willingness to explore uncharted territories and invest in unique ideas. Just as his innovative shots on the field left bowlers baffled, his bold investments in diverse startups are making waves in the business world. Dhoni’s leadership extends to knowing when to pivot. His retirement from Test cricket in the middle of a series was a strategic move to focus on shorter formats where he could contribute more. This is akin to a startup pivoting its business model. His investment in CARS24, amidst evolving consumer behavior towards buying used cars, and in Homelane, which leverages technology for home interiors, show his foresight in identifying and adapting to market shifts. One of the best examples of his strategic foresight is his investment in the bike startup, MotoRad Ltd. . Just as he guided India to many memorable chases with his strategic brilliance, Dhoni identified the rising trend of ebikes and the increasing demand for affordable mobility solutions. His investment in Motorad aligns with his knack for spotting opportunities that promise long-term growth, much like his uncanny ability to read the game and make winning moves. From orchestrating memorable cricket victories to driving business success, Dhoni’s journey is a masterclass in leadership and strategic thinking.
