My Take on Gokul Rajaram’s Software IPOs in India👇 India has seen several B2B SaaS IPOs in the last few years. When Rategain IPOed on Indian public markets, their revenue was $40M with $4M in operating profits and $1M in profits after tax. Today 2 years after the IPO Rategain is a $100M revenue with $20M in operating profits and $15M in profits after tax. When Rategain IPOed its market cap was $500M. Today they are valued at $1B in Indian public markets. As I always say, if you do $50M of revenue as a B2B SaaS company based out of India, Indian public markets will make you a Unicorn. You do not need private investors to make you a Unicorn. And public market Unicorns are real as they are vetted by millions of retail investors as well as institutions like HDFC and Kotak. I see Rategain being a $1B revenue company in the next 10 years, valued at $10B in Indian public markets. India will now see more such success stories which are built from India for the globe. India’s QIB (Qualified Institutional Buyers) and retail investors are hungry to buy B2B SaaS companies, built in India for the globe. This is the first wave where we are seeing B2B technology companies being built out of India and listed on Indian exchanges. The US has been seeing it for the last 40 years, and it accelerated with the listing of Salesforce. The next 25 years will be the Amrit Kaal in India, where we will see 100,000 new individuals working across 1000s of such companies create Rs 100 crores ($12M) of wealth individually.

This accelerated time-to-market allowed our client to gather user feedback rapidly, refine the product, and make informed decisions based on real data. Here's one more theme that has played out over the past decade in India SaaS: SaaS companies that sell into India/Asia (non-China/Japan). There's been a reasonably large set of investors in India who have been default no in this category, based on perception of limited TAM and GTM challenges. However, there is reason to be optimistic for this theme (we are!). A reasonable set of companies in the ecosystem have scaled, such as MoEngage, Darwinbox, Capillary Technologies, Yellow.ai, Unicommerce , Gupshup, CRMNEXT, LeadSquared. Companies like Salesforce, SAP etc have reached multi-hundred million ARR in India. As a result, the potential scale from sales in India has grown from the $15-20mm that people used to talk about 5 years back to perhaps $50mm in India, overall $100mm-150mm in Asia. I think we'll see more companies continue to get funded here as IT demand in India/SEA deepens and local requirements (mobile, India Stack, regulations, languages) get addressed. Founders and investors will need to tune into this being a solid path to go but will take longer to get to impact than US/EU-focused companies. Some characteristics we see at India/SEA-facing software companies: * Many start out in SMB but then find scale & success selling into enterprises. India market has a ton of SMBs (10mm+), a relatively light mid-market and a significant set of large enterprises. * Products tend to have feature sprawl and design-deficit but this can be fixed. * Some large sectors that are pulling at enterprise level e.g. BFSI, multi-sector conglomerates. Early traction from digital native companies (but naturally capped market). * Natural to go to SEA & Gulf countries. Product could remain fairly similar but sales & marketing motion can be quite different. To get really large, feels like will have to end up going to US/EU markets eventually. * ~10 years to $100mm ARR, with market leadership in Asia * Gross margins start out perhaps 10-15 points lower than corresponding companies in the US/EU but trend up over time. * Most India-facing SaaS companies are starting as India Pvt. Ltd. today, compared to 5 years ago (versus US C-corp), with a view to going public in India at $50-100mm revenue level.

"5 Reasons & 10 wisdom nuggets" Although I have no entitlement to share content on personal finance, I have 5 compelling reasons to share my learnings with you. 1. April marks the start of fiscal year in India, making it an opportune time for investment declarations 2. Since the implementation of new tax regime, many in earning class have ceased investing, mistakenly viewing it solely as a tax-saving exercise & thereby overlooking its potential for long-term wealth building 3. Additionally, personal finance is not formally taught in the Indian educational curriculum, despite its significance for achieving financial freedom. 4. Emphasising the enduring nature of wisdom and fundamentals is always beneficial 5. While general inflation numbers hover around 5-6%, they fail to adequately address the steep costs of corporate hospital fees, school fees and real estate in Tier 1 cities Top 10 fundamentals that every salaried class in India should understand 1. Asset Classes: Understanding different asset classes like debt, gold, real estate, and equity is key to growing your wealth 2. Diversification: Do not put all your eggs in the same basket. Different goals such as buying a house, children's education, marriage, retirement, or a vacation require different investment vehicles 3. Classification: Income (such as salary, rent, dividends) needs to be classified into investment (growth), purchase (depreciation), and expense 4. Purchasing Power: Understand inflation and invest in asset classes that outpace inflation 5. Rule of 72: Estimate how long an investment will take to double at a certain interest rate by dividing 72 by the interest rate (as a percentage). For Example: at 8% interest, it would take about 9 years (72 / 8) to double your money 6. Retirement: It's never too early or too late for retirement planning. Pension investments rose from 81K Crore in FY-15 to 10 Lakh Crore in FY-24, indicating a growth of 28.4% per annum. 7. Emergency: Always maintain 6-12 months' worth of emergency funds. Wars, recessions, and recent pandemics have pushed many borderline middle-class individuals into poverty 8. Habits: The paradox of wealth-building is that while it's a field of logic & numbers, the decisions that drive growth are often emotional. Poor habits lead to poor results 9. Risk Appetite: Each individual may have a different risk appetite, ranging from conservative to moderate to high. Choose financial instruments based on risk appetite and avoid falling for TV adds promoting the next "multi-bagger". 10. Insurance: Have adequate coverage of term life insurance. Avoid falling into the trap of money-back policies, which benefit insurance agents and companies more than individuals Finally, India’s ambition to become the 3rd largest economy in the next 3-5 years is not just dependent on the government but also on each citizen increasing their per capita income. India’s SaaS market is set to double and reach a massive $50 Bn of ARR by 2030 – but serial entrepreneur Saket Dandotia sees a gap in the bustling market 💡👇 His belief stems from a very Indian problem. For instance, India mints a whopping 1.5 Mn engineers each year on average. And while the likes of Asana or Slack are great for general task management and communication, they fail to deliver the same efficiency for code development and software processes, which are more technical in nature.   An engineer himself, Dandotia has been an entrepreneur since 2012 – and during his 12+ years at the helm of Linkites Infotech, he saw that collaboration tools were not ideal or seamless for software development workflows. He deduced that a solution would require bringing multiple tools to a single platform, which doesn’t exist. And voila – Onetab was born! Founded in November 2023 by him along with sonal Dandotia & Alok Patil – OneTab is a one-stop SaaS product that allows organisations to simplify software project management, primarily by integrating multiple apps for development and engineering teams. What sets it apart?
