Is the AI bubble about to burst? No, it's not - and anyone who is suggesting it's about to burst has a pretty short memory, or hasnt been on the planet very long. In the late 90's, there was a newly popularized invention called 'the internet' that was fueling the growth of a major bubble. At that time, I worked for a little internet company called America Online (AOL), in 10-year career that spanned both the bubble and the burst. There are some similarities between now and then, but, many major differences. The dot com implosion was triggered by the collapse of countless numbers of small companies being launched with entirely unproven business models, no revenue, and lackluster leadership. The implosion was magnified by two additional forces: 1) telcos spending billions to build out an excess of infrastructure well beyond market demand, and 2) a loss of market confidence caused by the financial hijinks of several companies, including Tyco, Enron, and even my old employer AOL. While the dot com crash was very real, well-run companies (like Amazon and many others) that had solid products and good leadership weathered the storm, and now form the backbone of our internet-driven economy. Will some of the many AI startups around today go broke? I'm sure most will. But many of the market dynamics that created the do com crash of 1999-2001 are not anywhere close to the dynamics of today. Even if many AI startups go broke, that doesnt mean that AI is 'going away'. If history is any guide, the bigger companies that are making short-term investments in AI infrastructure will be well positioned to meet the longer-term transition to an AI-driven economy.
