Exciting Developments in the Net Neutrality Debate Yesterday’s #netneutrality decision by the #FCC will surely prompt another wave of research on this topic, which I believe is the right reaction to ensure that the issue continues to be debated on scientific grounds. A recent empirical research article by Wolfgang Dr. Briglauer et al. suggests decreased fiber investments, for example. #SupplyChain risk & resilience still up on top of executive attention list... We appreciate the response to this year's study on #SCresilience along the #aerospace supply chain, which we presented at the Hashtag #ILA24, e.g. by #Handelsblatt or #FlugRevue. Thanks to the cooperation with #BDLI, #GIFAS and #ADS our findings are based on ~150 survey responses. Many companies in the Industrial Goods sector are likely to face restructuring needs in the near to mid-term. The German industrial goods sector anticipates an average decline of 8% in order volume for 2024. Within Mechanical and Plant Engineering, the forecast is even more concerning, with a projected decrease of over 11% for the second consecutive year, including a staggering drop of 27% in order intake last May. While these figures represent averages, some companies are experiencing revenue losses exceeding 20%. Capacity utilization has fallen to an average of 79%, significantly below the normal range of 84%-89%. The Ifo index and the manufacturing purchasing managers’ index, both key early warning indicators, have shown a dramatic decline. The manufacturing purchasing managers’ index plummeted to 40.3 in September, well below expectations and marking the lowest level recorded in 2024. Despite easing inflation, economic uncertainty, global conflicts, trade disputes, and an existing bullwhip effect in the supply chain are impeding short-term recovery. Even optimistic forecasts do not predict a turnaround before the third or fourth quarter of 2025. Additionally, the ongoing transition from combustion to electric, from product-centric to system-based models, and from hardware to software, alongside increasing sustainability demands and competition from Chinese firms offering lower-cost, yet “good enough” products, compel industrial goods companies to transform their business models. It is imperative for companies to address their short-term restructuring needs as part of their long-term transformation strategy. Two challenges form a common theme for many of my clients right now: 1. Access to capital 2. Absolute confidence in where they are heading The first is a challenge to convince C-suite colleagues and Boards to undertake the level of supply chain transformation that day-to-day operational experience tells the #COO they need to do. The second arises from the fact that supply chain transformation has a physical manifestation: trucks, sheds, MHE, inventory and a 10-20 year lifespan. If the design is not fit for purpose, it is visibly, painfully, expensively not fit for purpose and can be for a long time. GenAI is changing the way we manage supply chains and procurement. Our study shows that more than half of supply chain processes can already be automated or enhanced by GenAI. Although the importance of the technology is recognised, implementation is slow.
