Pregnancy and childbirth should be a time of joy and excitement for new parents, not one where they must worry about receiving adequate care.  What can we learn from Rwanda, where the maternal mortality rate has dropped a staggering 84%? Community-based healthcare providers—who actively listen to women's needs and opinions, and deliver culturally sensitive interventions—have worked wonders for Rwandan families, helping them feel supported and informed. For centuries, women of color in the U.S. have been pivotal leaders, organizers, and advocates for ending the maternal mortality crisis. At Pact, we believe in working together with local communities to tackle climate change and promote sustainable natural resource management. Our projects in Indonesia, Malawi and Rwanda are just three examples of our commitment to conservation and ecosystem restoration. Our MANGROVE SAHABAT TAMBAK LESTARI (MESTI) project in Indonesia is addressing the challenges faced by shrimp farmers who clear mangroves to make room for shrimp ponds. By promoting sustainable aquaculture practices, supporting farmers' business capacity, and enabling sustainability certifications, we are improving environmental health and empowering local communities. In Lake Malawi, we are working to protect the lake's rich biodiversity and ensure sustainable fisheries management by 2024 through our REFRESH program. By promoting self-sustaining fish populations and healthy aquatic habitats, we are helping fishers maintain their livelihoods and protect this important natural resource. In Rwanda, our Iluminating Small Scale Mining program is improving safety, productivity, and sustainability in the mining sector by introducing rechargeable headlamps that are powered by solar energy or the national grid connection. By replacing disposable battery-powered flashlights with more practical and durable equipment, we are making a real difference in the lives of women and men who work in this industry. I am excited to present a preview of the Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) campaign I spent over a year working on with Julia Arnold, the dedicated CARE International In Uganda team, and the fantastic support from NAVCORP GROUP. Early last month, we launched the first community activation event. This set the tone for a series of events that we will continue to engage in, aimed at transforming attitudes toward women's use of technology. This campaign employs both below-the-line (BTL) and above-the-line (ATL) media sensitization strategies and is structured into three key components: general audience messaging through billboards, posters, flyers, and an engaging radio drama "Echoes Of Change' focused on a woman's digital journey; community-specific events, including performances and awareness activities held at local health care centers during health day visits, that attracted a host of women from the communities along with their male counterparts. Our campaign was closed off by a huge concert led by one of Uganda’s leading Hip Hop artists, Navio. It targeted messaging for social norm reference groups, informal community leaders, and spouses. Our dedicated local partners, CEFORD, and hardworking Community-Based Trainers (CBTs) were instrumental in executing each meticulously detailed element to ensure maximum impact. The primary goal of this campaign is to enhance knowledge and shift attitudes regarding women’s use of technology, fostering an environment that supports women as they navigate and challenge societal norms. Decades of successful media campaigns in public health demonstrate the efficacy of radio campaigns in changing discriminatory beliefs. However, community engagement is essential for lasting change, empowering individuals and allies to support and champion this transformation actively. Youth have a meaningful role in #climateaction. However, youth face many challenges in getting their voices heard on the key decisions that will affect their future and future environment (CRC/GC26). #ChildFund invited young climate advocates across our operating countries to share their ideas on four thematic areas: 1. Climate-Resilient Education and Green Skills; 2. Youth-Led Initiatives and Accountability; 3. Community Empowerment and Local Partnerships 4. Child Protection in Climate Resilience.   Key Takeaways from the youth participants were: 🌺 Including youth through meaningful participation in the decision-making processes that support climate action initiatives in their communities.  🏫Providing learning opportunities in schools to build climate knowledge and develop solutions.  🌳 Increasing awareness-building initiatives to address the complex social-development challenges of climate change.   🌱Equipping youth with the right skills and tools to ensure their safety and protection in diverse spaces, to tackle the challenges faced now and in the future. Bad governance in NGOs can lead to severe consequences, undermining their mission and credibility. When governance structures are weak or poorly implemented, it can result in mismanagement of resources, leading to financial instability and the potential loss of donor support. Lack of transparency and accountability can destroy trust among stakeholders, causing reputational damage and diminishing public confidence in the organization. Ineffective decision-making processes may lead to the failure of programs and initiatives, wasting resources and negatively impacting the communities the NGO aims to serve. Ultimately, bad governance can derail an NGO’s efforts to create positive social change, causing harm to beneficiaries and jeopardizing the organization’s long-term sustainability.

Enjoyed reading about our joint kick off on #naturebasedsolutions for #children initiative (#NbS4Children) in #Asia, #Africa and continuous endeavor to seek different streams of funding through #impactinvesting and might I add #blendedfinance. Indeed, #NGOs need to re-think #businessmodels if they are to #scale and #replicate #development, #climatechange and #natureconservation work at the #grassroots. This becomes that much more of an urgent priority when you take into account traditional donor funding sources are fast diminishing. We, therefore, need to absolutely tap #transformationalmarkets and unlock #privatecapital to ensure #sustainablesolutions.
