Identify assumptions and beliefs limiting your thought process, and the perceived problems you want to resolve. What legacy will you leave? This is a question I often ask of leaders when we are in the midst of strategic planning. It’s an important question, but not one that’s easy to answer - because most leadership teams and boards are merely temporary stewards of a longer history in an organization. Last week, I was absolutely delighted to hang out with three of the founding members of Shakespeare In The Ruins as we talked about the remarkable legacy they created 30 years ago when they first performed Romeo and Juliet on a bootstrap budget and a dream. Could they have known that 30 years later, their wish would be thriving as Manitoba’s only Shakespeare company, selling out performances every summer under the artistic direction of Rodrigo Beilfuss and expert management of Sara Malabar? Could they have known that their dream would spark our school program and accessibility commitments - ensuring that everyone has a place in theatre (including those who haven’t always felt welcome)? Could they dream that their three public performances would lead to our partnership with Stony Mountain Penitentiary- where offenders have the opportunity to engage in the transformative experience of theatre? As we celebrated the opening night of Iago Speaks - another incredible feat - that our theatre is now running a full repertory season (we have two shows running back to back, with the same actors, 40 performances for 30 days straight) - I asked Deb Patterson, Lora Schroeder, and Arne MacPherson their thoughts on what made the organization so successful. They commented that one of the most important decisions they made was actually to step back and put the company in the hands of people who loved it. That by allowing for a changing board and staff, new life and ideas could be breathed into the company - keeping it current and agile. Ensuring it remained relevant for new audiences. It’s pretty insightful and inspiring as the current chair to hear such wisdom from these visionaries. It makes me think about decisions I’ve made in my career, to step back or out of the way, to create space for others to run. I’m curious about your thoughts on this. A study by Verizon Canada shows that 50% of meetings are unproductive. Do you agree? 🤔🤔 ××××××××××××××××××××××× Just completed a 2-day workshop with a group of managers where we covered effective meeting facilitation technique. Here are their key takeaway from the meeting role play we conducted. Hopefully you will find it useful for your next meeting. BEFORE - Craft and email a proper meeting agenda to all. - Ensure those who MUST attend, be present. Check with them personally before fixing the meeting dates. Let them know you need them, not their representative. - Insist team members confirm their attendance prior to the meeting. - If you have prework for them to complete, insist they submit prior to the meeting (this adds the pressure to get them to complete it) DURING - Start on time. - Raise the energy in the room with short ice breakers. - Reiterate the meeting agenda to ensure everyone is on the same page. - Set ground rules so everyone knows how you expect the meeting to go. - Appoint a time keeper and minute taker. Don't do everything yourself. This allow you to focus and listen to what is being said. Rotate this 2 roles among team members for subsequent meeting to keep everyone engaged. - Use 'parking lot' to reduce derailment when members bring up conversations that are worth listening but not part of the original agenda. By using parking lot, you create a safe space for people to speak without fearing you will shit them out. - use tools such as post it pad for brainstorming, dun just ask "What's your idea". Generally introverts tend to be quite and only answer when invited. By getting everyone to write on post-it pad, it ensures everyone contribute. Then get them to elaborate. This makes the meeting engaging and meaningful for everyone. - For collaborative decision making, use tools such as weighted decision making matrix. This ensures everyone take ownership of the decision and get everyone engaged. - An interesting practice is to get the time keeping to announce time every 15 minutes. - Get each team member with assigned responsibilities to recap what they need to do. Don't summarise it for them. If you do it, there is a chance they may just agree with you without understanding what you said. Today - right now, at this very moment - we unquestioningly allow all employees to create new data.  The outcomes of this de facto process drive nearly all other decisions and strategies regarding technology and security. Is this still the best approach for companies? In my recent Substack post, I pick up the discussion from one of our recent podcasts, starting with the origins of this practice through its current impact on data sprawl and propose an alternative. As IT departments navigate daily breaches, widespread security concerns, and the unstoppable advancements of xAI, now seems like as good a time as any to challenge the conventional wisdom of universal data creation rights. Specifically, I am exploring Change Management beyond my CMP certification, with a focus on two globally recognized programs: Prosci - Change Practitioner and the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP Global) - CCMP. The cost disparity between the two is significant, with differing processes to attain each designation. One involves a presentation and evaluation, while the other emphasizes validation of knowledge and experience through an application and exam. In my search for Change Manager roles, I've noticed that some positions require PROSCI Training over CCMP. The price for PROSCI exceeds $4,000, while the Certification Exam Fee for ACMP ranges from $595 to $745.
