Delighted to be featured in this The Globe and Mail piece on the challenges leaders face with leading teams in a hybrid work environment.   In addition to describing why it’s important for leaders to get comfortable using the communication channels their employees use to share and collaborate, I spoke about why leaders should not treat in-office days as just another work day.   So here's some things leaders should consider implementing on in-office days to maximize the benefits of a hybrid work approach: 📌 Promote collaborative efforts by scheduling team meetings with detailed agendas of issues to discuss for complex problem-solving and brainstorming sessions. 📌Organize training sessions and workshops to help employees develop new skills and to promote shared learning. 📌Offer activities to promote team cohesion and bonding. For example, use these in-office days to celebrate key milestones and to inform the team of progress to date to drive motivation. 📌Support mentoring and other activities that benefit most from in-person contact. 📌Encourage social interactions to combat any feelings of isolation or loneliness that can arise from working remotely. A study by Verizon Canada shows that 50% of meetings are unproductive. Do you agree? 🤔🤔 ××××××××××××××××××××××× Just completed a 2-day workshop with a group of managers where we covered effective meeting facilitation technique. Here are their key takeaway from the meeting role play we conducted. Hopefully you will find it useful for your next meeting. BEFORE - Craft and email a proper meeting agenda to all. - Ensure those who MUST attend, be present. Check with them personally before fixing the meeting dates. Let them know you need them, not their representative. - Insist team members confirm their attendance prior to the meeting. - If you have prework for them to complete, insist they submit prior to the meeting (this adds the pressure to get them to complete it) DURING - Start on time. - Raise the energy in the room with short ice breakers. - Reiterate the meeting agenda to ensure everyone is on the same page. - Set ground rules so everyone knows how you expect the meeting to go. - Appoint a time keeper and minute taker. Don't do everything yourself. This allow you to focus and listen to what is being said. Rotate this 2 roles among team members for subsequent meeting to keep everyone engaged. - Use 'parking lot' to reduce derailment when members bring up conversations that are worth listening but not part of the original agenda. By using parking lot, you create a safe space for people to speak without fearing you will shit them out. - use tools such as post it pad for brainstorming, dun just ask "What's your idea". Generally introverts tend to be quite and only answer when invited. By getting everyone to write on post-it pad, it ensures everyone contribute. Then get them to elaborate. This makes the meeting engaging and meaningful for everyone. - For collaborative decision making, use tools such as weighted decision making matrix. This ensures everyone take ownership of the decision and get everyone engaged. - An interesting practice is to get the time keeping to announce time every 15 minutes. - Get each team member with assigned responsibilities to recap what they need to do. Don't summarise it for them. If you do it, there is a chance they may just agree with you without understanding what you said.
