Field Day Lab is compiling an exhaustive list of classroom-ready learning games and could use your help in finding them. Specifically we need to find every game that meets the following requirements: - Grade 3 through 20 - Free or at least a demo - Playable on a chromebook - Designed to teach a specific subject, or has materials that translate the game into classroom subjects We’ve found all the games that used to be on gameUP, and some of the bigger collections like icivics. The recent layoffs at Inflexion, Humanoid and the Edmonton devs impacted by the closure of Worlds Untold hit close to home. The game dev community is strong, but we need to look out for each other. In that spirit, I’d like to draw your attention to the work being done at the Scaffold Institute. Their new cohort is specifically for devs impacted by the layoffs, and could hopefully provide an opportunity for those impacted. It’s supported by provincial and federal funding so there’s no cost to you.  I've been in one of their Cohorts for most of the year, and I’ve found the experience very worthwhile. The networking with other Alberta devs is invaluable, and the scheduled talks are packed with insights. If you're a game dev looking for your next move in Alberta, I’d recommend you check out Scaffold's program. They'll help you navigate the Canadian game dev landscape, from mentorship and networking to understanding the financial resources available if you choose to start your own studio. Of the recent Alberta studios successful at applying through the CMF for funding, almost all were enrolled at Scaffold. I am honored to yet again host another table topic at XDS Summit in Vancouver this year. Thank you #XDS2024 for the opportunity! I hope to see some of you there at my table and below is the brief of my topic. Effective Collaboration: Understanding the Differences Between Lateral and Hierarchical Leadership One of the keys to success in any external development partnership is to overcome communication barriers to allow the game dev team and their external partners to build trust and cultivate a safe & effective work environment. Conflict arises when there are assumptions that others think and operate like them. Setting a clear expectation early on eliminates misunderstanding and unnecessary conflicts. Important part of this effort when dealing with global partnership is having a deeper comprehension of the differences between cultures that adhere to lateral and hierarchical leadership so there is a context of how these societies function, make decisions and why. This understanding will not only provide insights into the areas that need improvements within the external engagements and healthier ways to adapt when working with a different culture, it will also develop respect and empathy among the game dev team and their external partners, eventually leading to a seamless collaboration even when the work itself is challenging.
