Such a sad situation for Arkane Studios Austin. No team deserves to be shutdown like this. I played a lot of Redfall and enjoyed it. This isn't all corporate greed and stock prices; we as fans have a role in this as well. I'm not saying that we shouldn't critique or call out unkept promises during development. Far too often when we criticize, we lose the human element behind these large projects. Those at Arkane, Bethesda Game Studios, タンゴゲームワークス（Tango Gameworks）, this is not your fault. Hi all. I want to share another magic item I've created for an upcoming D&D 5th edition supplemental item module that I'm working on. This item is called Viridis, which loosely means Green, and is inspired by Emerald Dragons. Since I'm not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast, I'll be removing any Forgotten Realms lore I desribed when it's included in my upcoming module—it's just for my current campaign haha. About the weapon, I wanted to make it a Halberd because 5th Edition D&D doesn't currently have any unique magic halberds ha. I've always been interested in some of the less used weapon types in D&D. Bit late talking about this one but huge news coming from 343 Industries, both a re-brand to Halo Studios and confirmation that they are switching development to Unreal. 🗞️ This comes off the back of 343's struggles with development of Halo: Infinite. We've seen many other studios move away from their own engines to Unreal, notably CD Projekt Red! Adam Duff LucidPixul makes a Souls Game analogy on working on your craft as an artist in this video cast, and it is great because it is true! Life is like souls games you gota keep at it and at some point, you get that reward in life. Great analogy! Also, if you have not sub go subscribed to Adam Duff, all artists need to hear what he says in his casts. Same with casts like Bobby Chiu you need these expert artists in your life who bring positivity in frustrating times. The last few posts I talked about reaching some goals or going for some goals in life while also having challenges prior. That is part of life and something I have zero regret doing. I talked on crunch and some to a great majority was self-imposed because if you know me personally, I am a workaholic. It has only been recently (3-4years) where I am allowing myself to enjoy more life and take time on more personal things. But, without that grind I know I would not be where I am. I have always been the type of artist who does art even after work and studies at a constant, and I still do this. :) This comes mainly because I always feel that the industry as at a constant shift from technology to art trends, but I also enjoy learning all this, so it is not a problem. Beyond of course the constant work it takes. It is not easy it never was for newer artists or even experienced artists. I hear like Adam many newer artists that it is "harder" now and while to some degree that is true. The fact remains it was never easy to enter and stay in this industry for extended period of time. The devotion it takes is truly extreme. Sometimes I put it akin to a calling this is as my calling in a non-religious way of saying it of course. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else in life. That is perhaps the biggest reason some newer artists who have that fire but cannot get into the industry hurt so much. If I could express to artists is that many of these hardships that seem impossible to accomplish are not. A mountain of goals is only a mountain of goals in your mind if that is how you view it. Instead of mountains think of them as smaller hills that once you reach to top of those it gives you more experience to reach the next higher hill and so on. This post is getting a bit long for sure, but we do live in a world of instant satisfaction and nothing in life that is worth it, is instant. From the concept of trying your best to be the best person you can be to meeting and marrying your partner and staying in a long relationship it is not easy, and you must work at it day and day out. I am lucky to have found a person on this life who appreciates what I do daily, because we are both artists Sharlene Lin my soul mate. We have both gone through a life event prior that make many life issues trivial. Maya Attribute Options tool.! Newest addition to my personal tool set. Took me a few days to write it on and off. During this time the game industry's turbulence is shocking, and the launch of a new game studio like Simply Sweet Games might seem like a wild venture. However, I am deeply proud of my journey towards building inclusivity, equity, and diversity in gaming. After all, these values have been the driving force behind my decision to establish a new game studio with the amazing Tina Merry. Spaces like DIG are essential now more than ever. They remind us that our choices as leaders and creators can either lead to significant industry improvement or, unfortunately, to a collateral wasteland of effort and broken dreams. #realtalk For anyone recently affected by industry layoffs, I highly recommend taking a moment of rest. Of the many notable experiences from #MDEV, the Producer Careers panel I did with Lilly Arredondo, Angela D., and Joe Truesdale was one of the highlights! Reflecting on the main points, here are three takeaways I wanted to share: 1. There is no single way to become a game Producer. "Origin stories" are varied and sometimes surprising! If you want to become a Producer, start being a producer where you are: organize your team, schedule milestones, coordinate and connect the dots with other people, be the one your teammates come to when they want to understand what's going on, what to prioritize, etc. because you have a solid grasp on whatever portion of the project you're responsible for. Or jump in on a game jam team - tight timelines need maximum efficiency and most teams don't have the benefit of a producer keeping track of the project. 2. Let curiosity and willingness to learn drive your career path. There are so many directions to take in production and there is always more to learn. Even when you think you've got things figured out, new teams, new people, changes in the industry, etc. will always present new opportunities to learn. Every new project will present different challenges and shifts that will force you to expand your production "toolkit". Lean into that need for flexibility to gain a wider understanding of the possibilities. 3. Look for mentorship wherever you can. There is always someone out there more experienced and willing to help. Reach out and ask for even a small amount of their time (I'm almost always open to giving a 1/2 hour to mentor budding Producers!). You never know how that relationship may grow or who they may introduce you to for additional help. You will need to drive this, so take the steps to make it happen - most professionals are friendly and open to helping, but they won't be reaching out to you (Amir Satvat's mentorship resources linked in the comments).
