Bringing cultural ways to mental health systems to serve the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
About us
Transforming Indigenous Mental Health and Wellbeing (TIMHWB) is a ground-breaking research program transforming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health care through Aboriginal leadership and authentic partnerships with Aboriginal organisations. Three streams of research activity are defining and establishing culturally safe mental health support, through building an evidence base of what works. Our vision is that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have the opportunity to thrive through services and systems that better support their needs, with a focus on: - empowering access to services - building a culturally competent workforce and; - establishing cultural safety in mainstream clinical services including through the employment of cultural healers and Elders.

The Working Together book was a gamechanger for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and social and emotional wellbeing when it was published ten years ago. It's still as relevant today as it ever was - AFL and SEWB star Michael Mitchell even reckons its a good gift. Considering its free to download, https://shorturl.at/QxFJx, it's not a bad idea 🤔 #workingtogetheranniversary

Associate Professor Jeffrey Ansloos recently spoke at the prestigious Robin Winkler Lecture for 2024, presented by the UWA School of Psychological Science and Centre for Social Impact. We were honoured to host him at the The University of Western Australia. A/Prof. Ansloos discussed his research in Canada - he's found that being Indigenous and having a mental health emergency makes you more likely to experience harm from police and less likely to receive support #decolonisingpsychology Australian Indigenous Psychologists Association (AIPA) NACCHO Australia Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia
