🔍 New Research: Breaking the Cycle of Childhood Trauma and Youth Justice Groundbreaking University of Adelaide study reveals alarming links between childhood trauma and youth detention. The research, led by Associate Professor Catia Malvaso, found rates of adverse childhood experiences among detained youth in Australia are four times higher than international averages. Key findings: - 70% experienced physical abuse - 81% reported emotional abuse - Between 1/3 and 2/3 reported challenging family circumstances The message is clear: punitive measures aren't the solution. We need trauma-informed approaches and better support systems to address the root causes. What are your thoughts on implementing trauma-informed practices in youth justice? #YouthJustice #ChildhoodTrauma #SocialImpact #AustralianResearch #MentalHealth https://lnkd.in/gmYg6hKC

As we know, thoughts of suicide are relatively common where domestic abuse has been experienced. A domestic abuse and suicidality toolkit has recently been published by the Cheshire East Domestic and Sexual Abuse Partnership. This provides useful information of the groups of people most at risk of suicide and identifying some of the warning signs and some activities that can be helpful to people having suicidal thoughts. If you are involved as a frontline worker in domestic abuse work, this is well worth a read. If you are a counsellor/psychotherapist in the field, also worth reading! It's great to see such resources being put together and shared. #domesticabuse #mentalhealth #suicide #suicidalideation #counsellors #idva #CEDSAP #psychotherapists da-and-suicidality-toolkit-v1.pdf (cheshireeast.gov.uk)

Latest published article from the Journal of Muslim Mental Health Volume 17 • Issue 2 • 2023 Original Article Faith-Based Domestic Violence Training: Building Community Responses with an Islamic Perspective in Palestine Denise Ziya Berte and Fayez Mahamid https://lnkd.in/gw3k7WWq Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women globally but has become a contentious issue between secular western factions and traditional Islamic countries, slowing progress. In Palestine, the proposed Family Protection Act is stalled due to cultural and religious concerns. A study introduced a domestic violence training in Palestine by the Peaceful Families Project, emphasizing faith-based prevention. Participants showed significant improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The training could shift the narrative, counter western biases, and promote culturally relevant solutions. Faith-based approaches enhance community motivation, ownership, and innovation in addressing domestic violence.

📣 Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak at the Diverse Voices Conference in Edmonton to present our new research on predicting and preventing male perpetration of domestic violence. ✨ It’s a privilege to share this work with advocates, front-line workers, and researchers across Western Canada and beyond who lead the charge to end family violence. 🚨 Our study, using a robust 10-year dataset supplied by Calgary Police Service, finds a distinct trajectory of increased criminal behaviour and police interactions among male perpetrators before a charge involving domestic violence in 2019. 🧩 This means that if we intervene earlier with men with the right resources we can prevent the escalation of violence. Ultimately, we need our governments, including our Ministries of Justice and Public Safety, to prioritize funding a violence prevention strategy focused on engaging men and boys – because the cost of raising perpetrators hurts everyone. 🎙️ I’m grateful for spaces like this that create opportunities to learn together and take up a multidisciplinary approach to preventing and addressing violence. Shoutout to the conference organizers for all the work they put in to make this possible! 👏🏽 Big thank you to the University of Calgary Faculty of Social Work and the School of Public Policy along with my coauthors for all their work in shaping this research: Ken Fyie, Ron Kneebone, Casey Boodt, Stephanie Montesanti, Kim Ruse, MSW, and Rebecca Davidson. Good article 👏🏾
The UWA Public Policy Institute joins The Australian in drawing attention to the outstanding work of UWA's Centre of Best Practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention, under the leadership of Professor Pat Dudgeon, a Bardi woman from the Kimberley. The Centre's research confirms that #selfdetermination is core to the goal of reducing Indigenous suicide. Professor Dudgeon acknowledges that there has been change, "but it isn't fast enough". She points to notorious youth detention centres such as Banksia Hill and Unit 18, described by Judge Hylton Quail as "a barbaric dungeon where children are deprived and dehumanised".
