Key messages EFPA working group on Community Psychology´s symposium at the 33rd International Congress of #Psychology, 25th July 2024: 📌 CP addresses the complex relationship between individuals and their communities, focusing on multiple levels of analysis (personal, interpersonal, community), giving voice to their needs to tackle community social challenges and promote #socialinclusion and #wellbeing. 👥 CP seeks to prevent or reduce negative #mentalhealth consequences by working collaboratively with individuals in their everyday contexts, facilitating their competence to bring about social change. 📑 Psychologists can play a proactive role in shaping legislation by anticipating social policies, critical examining existing laws, disseminating their insights, and monitoring the implementation of policies. 🛠 Continued training for psychologists is key. 💡 Collaborative methodologies are essential for interventions in living contexts, requiring a systemic vision to support community health promotion through innovative responses. #ICP2024

During the week, two of my 200 Level Students in the Department of Mass Communication at McPherson University , Oluwatomisin Oyebode and Faith Olalowo submitted their group assignment to my desk and I find it quite lovely to share, at least to further commend their ability to ideate, script, voice and produce a short, but detailed film on "Depression" . The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognises depression as a global health concern and include targets to address it in its Goal 3 which is geared towards promoting good health and well-being, and thus directly address depression as a central component of mental health. Tomisin and Faith, having noticed my love for the UN SDGs, of course evident from the assignments I give them and their colleagues, walked into my office about two weeks ago and presented the idea of producing a content on 'depression'. It will interest you that Depression can spiral into suicide which accounts for about 800 thousand deaths annually. Moreover, the mental health problem knows no age limit and nowadays, it has become common among Young Adults - many of such cases I've addressed myself during interaction with students and youths in my community. I believe if advocacy on getting help early can be intensified frequently on our University campuses, Communities and Religious Organisations, the tide of 'depression' can easily stemmed through our collective effort. Do not forget, SPEAK OUT EARLY and GET HELP !!!! Note: The shots were taken on the campus of McPherson University and Extras used in the film cuts across departments including the department of Mass Communication. #UNESCO #SDGs #Goal3 #MentalHealth #UNDP #GirlChildEducation #Communication #Development #Advocacy #Wellbeing

In honor of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, throughout July we will highlight studies and resources to deepen your practice. Today, we examine an idiographic study looking at six Muslim women from Afghanistan who resettled in Australia as refugees. The study followed them for a decade and examines the complex overwhelm and trauma of their refugee experiences, while also delving into their incredible post-trauma recovery and growth. This study highlights potential gender-specific traumas throughout the refugee journey for women and girls, and the need for specific delivery of services from program providers to this vulnerable group. Check out the full analysis, and tips to translate this research into practice, here: https://bit.ly/4cnU7pf CONCEPT Continuing & Professional Studies Division, Palo Alto University

"I will not go to a psychologist!" - you can hear it quite often from people who need psychological support. It is especially true of teenagers, who can be withdrawn and distrustful. Our psychologist, Olena Kramarenko, shares her own experience on how to change this situation and help a teenager open up. Ruslan's mother, who suffered from apathy and social isolation because of the war, turned to Olena. At first, the boy categorically refused the help of a psychologist. However, the psychologist conducted special training and explained the role of the psychologist profession, and the teenager agreed to the first meeting. The first visit was not easy - the boy remained withdrawn and wary. But at the end of the session, he asked about the next meeting. And each next meeting showed more and more noticeable progress. The key to success was the adaptation of methods to the interests of the teenager. For example, the projective technique "Non-existent animal" was transferred to a digital format. It interested a boy who is fond of computer technology. The results were immediate: the teenager became more open. He began to discuss his problems actively and looked for ways to solve them. His self-esteem and self-confidence have grown significantly. Olena's case is an excellent example of how an individual approach and adaptation of methods for each case help a person to overcome emotional difficulties and reveal his potential. *** Consultations are conducted within the program "Complex Psychological Assistance to Children and Families Affected by War", which is implemented within the USAID project "Development of a Sustainable Public Health System" with the support of Pact. It aims to provide psychological support to displaced persons - adults and children who have survived trauma. #Restore #Pact #USAID_Ukraine
