Recently, Hodyl & Co visited central Hobart as part of Council’s implementation program to deliver the 2023 Central Hobart Plan. This ambitious plan will shape development in the central city over the next 20 years. We are excited to be offering our expertise to further guide City of Hobart in the implementation of proposed built form controls, ensuring the controls deliver buildings and places that strengthen the distinct qualities of Hobart and contribute to a future city that is compact, vibrant and provides high amenity.

Our Managing Director, Leanne Hodyl, recently participated in an important and timely discussion on the suitability of Floor Area Ratio vs ‘deemed to comply’ building height and setback controls in Victoria. Floor Area Ratio controls offer an alternative pathway to achieving well-designed buildings that are responsive to context and can avoid the potential pitfalls of ‘deemed to comply’ controls which don’t provide the certainty that they promise for either housing supply or design quality. Hodyl & Co have been leaders in Victoria in designing and implementing sophisticated and effective planning controls that deliver increased densities together with good design and broader public benefits. Leanne was joined on the panel by Kris Daff (Assemble) and Andrew Spencer (SGS Economics and Planning), and hosted by Patrick Fensham (PIA Victorian President and SGS Economics and Planning). Thanks to Urban Design Forum Australia and Planning Institute of Australia for hosting this enlightening conversation.

The exhibition stage for the Macaulay Planning Scheme Amendment closes today. Covering parts of Kensington and North Melbourne, the Macaulay area is already experiencing significant development activity. Progressing the amendment is crucial to ensuring that there are robust development controls in place. This includes density controls to provide certainty on the amount of development while enabling design flexibility, along with development contributions to help fund public realm upgrades, open space and community infrastructure for existing and new communities. More information on the amendment is available on Participate Melbourne https://lnkd.in/esWxeqaB Image: View of Chelmsford Precinct, City of Melbourne.

We recently had the pleasure of attending Geelong Society of the Operatic and Dramatic Arts' performance of Little Mermaid. For close to a century, GSODA has nurtured young performers and a multi-generational community of volunteers. In 2022, this esteemed company lost its home, posing a significant threat to its continued sustainability and impeding its ability to pursue grants and external investment. Hodyl & Co have been working alongside Sibling Architecture to deliver a feasibility study that will act as a key advocacy piece in securing a new home for GSODA in Geelong. By 2041, there will be over 100,000 young people living in Greater Geelong. We need to balance the scale of positive investment in sports and recreation with investment in the arts. With ambitions to be a thriving cultural centre, creating welcoming, safe and joyful pathways for young people to experience the arts will be essential.
