CRA welcomed the announcement today by Minister for Industry and Science, Hon Ed Husic MP, of the Terms of Reference and Panel for the Strategic Examination of Australia’s Research and Development (R&D) system. This is an important and nationally significant review, and CRA congratulates Minister Husic and the Albanese Government on the initiative.  Notably, our third annual NIPF in Canberra last week, opened by Minister Husic, was closely aligned with the SERD Terms of Reference, looking forward to a new Australian business model that reflects our full innovative potential. “Building on our R&D capacity and capability is essential to securing a resilient and innovative economy that will provide well for Australians now and into the future,” said CRA CEO, Jane O’Dwyer. At yesterday’s National Innovation Policy Forum, CRA welcomed the announcement by Shadow Minister Paul Fletcher that the Opposition supports the continuation of Australia’s Cooperative Research Centres Program.    Established in 1990, the CRC Program is an Australian Government initiative that funds industry-led collaborations between industry, researchers, and end users, helping to drive innovation and tackle the issues we currently face within the R&D landscape.   At the event, Shadow Minister Fletcher highlighted that “a lot more thought needs to be put into how we get the research out of the labs and into the marketplace” – something that lies at the core of this industry-led initiative.    We appreciate the recognition for the CRC Program, which will clearly be integral to helping shape Australia’s future business model.   #NIPF2024 #CRCProgram #CRCs #cooperativeresearch #industryresearchcollaboration #industryresearch #australianbusinessmodel

Patricia Kelly PSM, Chair of CRA, has welcomed Dr Cathy Foley AO, Australia’s Chief Scientist, to the stage to deliver the 2024 Ralph Slatyer Address on Science and Society - her last major speech in Canberra. Reflecting on her 4-year tenure in this position, as well as her long history of incredible research achievements, Dr Foley outlined some of the key R&D activities on which she has advised, and of which she has been a part, while also looking forward at what now needs to happen - R&D investment, better funding for fundamental science (PhDs etc.), coordinated research infrastructure… and the patience, commitment and courage to try something new and make it all happen. She rounded off by saying we need to have faith in our capabilities, and focus on the real goals we can achieve. “We cannot become truly innovative until we imagine ourselves as that nation . . . We need to be prepared to step up and lead . . . “The Missing Middle”. Our second panel explored this theme, delving into how we attract investment, and government as a demanding customer. Panellists included Annette Schmiede, Prof, Elanor Huntington, and David Forman, with moderator Cameron Begley. There’s a buzz about the room as delegates discuss important questions including, how can policies simulate demand for Australian innovation (across all sectors) and specifically to drive growth in the missing middle? How could government pursue policies that catalyse and create markets for emerging technologies and innovations? Assistant Minister the Hon Tim Ayres delivers on a Future Made in Australia. He mentioned the two big challenges: 1) climate and energy, and 2) government engaging ALL leaders in our national interests. Including engagement in our innovation policy. He said, we need to use all the strengths we have. He then went on to say how Australia is blessed to have all critical minerals and wind resources above ground.
