The #ANC has just suffered a historic failure to achieve a renewed majority in the #SAElections2024. While much commentary will focus on the horse trading required to establish a coalition, and in which direction that coalition will lead #SouthAfrica, the deeper story is why the ANC developed a reputation of incompetence, of which the inability to deliver reliable #power is a core component. Western visitors to South Africa marvel at the country’s rich wildlife and culture, and then breathe a sigh of relief as they fly home, leaving endemic power cuts behind. But have they really left them behind? The #energytransition will see a tremendous expansion in #electricity demand, akin to that which South Africa experienced with the end of apartheid. Western countries risk suffering the same fate as South Africa if they fail to make the necessary investments in both generation and system stability to support that future demand. South Africa’s solar boom South Africa's solar power revolution emerged from the failure of Eskom, the state-owned electricity provider plagued by corruption and incompetence under the African National Congress (ANC). Despite recent stabilization efforts, years of blackouts prompted a surge in rooftop solar installations, increasing by 453% in two years. This shift occurred despite regulatory challenges and unreliable tax rebates. Lower costs for solar panels and batteries have enabled consumers to find cost-effective, off-grid electricity solutions. While the centralized electricity system isn't obsolete, the growing affordability of solar energy suggests that more households and businesses in Africa and beyond may choose to generate their own power.

Is the lack of a deal between Total Energies and Petro SA to explore South Africa's largest gas reserve a win for the #JustEnergyTransition? OR is this an indication of the complexities and lukewarm commitment from South Africa to wean itself from fossil fuels? 🛑Petro SA (state-run petroleum company that was to buy the gas)states that ‘price’ is the main reason. Still, Total maintains that ‘technical complexity and uncertainty over commercial viability’ are the main reasons. ⚠️Some 2022 studies hold that #SouthAfrica should not exploit any new oil and gas reserves if it is to honour its climate commitments. (Meridian Economics- “Hot Air About Gas”, and International Insititute of Sustainable Development- “Gas Pressure”) Additionally, they state that ending power blackouts (load shedding) does not require the use of any additional #fossilfuel generation, and the deployment of a further 5 GW (as of 2021) of #renewableenergy sources would have allowed Eskom to eliminate 96.5% of load shedding. Other stakeholders hold that gas is cleaner than coal, will help address load shedding, is a potential source of revenue, and should be part of the mix as South Africa transitions to cleaner energy sources. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his first speech since forming a coalition government in May, said the nation is experiencing a “renewable energy revolution,” with upcoming projects expected to attract around ZAR 400 billion ($21.9 million) in private investment. He said that upcoming projects are expected to bring around ZAR 400 billion in new private investment and create many jobs. He noted the country’s largest-ever private solar energy project, which will add 256 MW to the grid with over 390,000 solar panels installed. “We have seen, for example, how the Northern Cape has already attracted billions of rands of investment in renewable energy projects,” Ramaphosa said. “South Africa is undergoing a renewable energy revolution that is expected to be the most significant driver of growth and job creation in the next decade and beyond. We will see more of these projects taking shape across our country in the months and years to come. New Study Looks to Eastern Cape For Green Hydrogen Feasibility The Eastern Cape has become the new focus of South Africa's green hydrogen plans. The province is at the centre of a feasibility study to assess the potential for the production and export of green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources and is a clean and versatile alternative to conventional fossil fuels. Green hydrogen will be in increasingly high demand as countries aim to reduce carbon emissions. The study will be carried out by a consortium led by Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and boutique consultancy firm Ikigai Group. ☀️ Rubis Energy forms joint venture for solar market Rubis Energy Kenya has entered the clean energy market through a joint venture deal with Solarise Africa as the oil firm seeks to diversify from its traditional market of fossil fuels. The two on Wednesday signed the deal creating RUBiSOL,a firm that will sell clean power solutions to commercial and industrial firms in the East African region. RUBiSOL is seeking to tap into the growing number of businesses notably in Kenya that are opting for alternative power systems due to the unreliability of supplies from Kenya Power. Rubis is the second biggest oil marketer in Kenya with a market share of 15.56% and is banking on the vast footprint and growing popularity of solar power solutions to drive sales through RUBiSOL. "Expansion of the renewable energy agenda in Africa is a strategic priority for RUBiS Energie. By partnering with Solarise Africa, we are taking a significant step towards a sustainable future,” Olivier Sabrié,Managing Director of Rubis Kenya said on Wednesday. Solarise Africa, is a pan-African firm that manufactures solar and clean energy systems. It has 79 contracted sites in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa. The sites have a combined maximum output of 24 Megawatts Peak. “Our expertise in decentralised solar and other energy solutions, combined with Rubis's strong market presence, will unlock new possibilities and empower businesses to thrive," Jan Albert Valk, Co-Founder and CEO of Solarise Africa added. Rubis joins its local rival TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya in the solar solutions market. Total has for the past few years been selling solar power systems, lanterns and lamps that mainly target homes. Uptake of clean energy, mainly solar, has been on a steady rise in Kenya over the past few years from wealthy households,those far from the national electricity grid and businesses. The popularity is mainly driven by the unreliability of supplies from Kenya Power given the rise in frequencies of blackouts. Homes and businesses seeking to install solar systems are driven also by the urge for cheaper electricity away from the hustle of high monthly bills. Some 355 manufacturers, contractors and importers took production permits in the 2023/24 year, underscoring the rising demand of solar energy. Rubis and Solarise Africa did not however disclose the capital injection in creating RUBiSOL,in the move that offers Rubis a chance to drive its interests in the renewable energy space. Rubis,the parent firm of Rubis Energy Kenya bought 80% ownership of French energy firm Photosol two years ago. This (acquisition of Photosol) led to the creation of Rubis Photosol, the subsidiary spearheading the oil firm’s expansion into the clean energy space in Europe. Besides selling the clean energy solutions, Rubis Energy Kenya says it will also install solar panels on its fuel stations and depots, joining rival firms that are also embracing their own power generation from clean sources.

Irrespective of the industry, electricity access is critical to development. South Africa has been pursuing an energy development strategy for over a decade that integrates grid tied renewable energy ( solar and wind) with its existing predominantly and historically coal dominated energy system. Can other governments in Africa replicate South Africa's model, maybe, can they at least try and emulate the strategy, yes indeed. The nuance in this statement is that many countries in Africa do not have robust national grids, to wheel power from renewable energy optimizing regions, to key load- bearing communities. Also reinforcing grids to efficiently carry variable power is expensive. SA has been able to develop financing structures that other, smaller, economies, are likely to struggle to establish. Yet, the cost of establishing distributed renewable energy systems has been coming down as well and for many African countries this does present an option. To truly industrialize Africa is still likely to need, and pursue, development of the continent's vast fossil resources.
