RE: Power Grid Stability Drives Unexpected Manufacturing Growth in South Africa for July. The stability of South Africa's power grid over the past 150 days has had a significant impact on manufacturing output. With less frequent power interruptions, factories can operate more efficiently, leading to increased productivity and better utilization of capacity. This stability could explain why July's manufacturing growth outpaced expectations at 2.1% month-on-month, as continuous energy supply is critical for sectors that rely heavily on machinery and equipment. The correlation between power stability and industrial performance is often strong. • SOUTH AFRICA JULY MANUFACTURING RISES 1.7% Y/Y; EST. +0.9% • SOUTH AFRICA JULY MANUFACTURING RISES 2.1% M/M; EST. +1.2%

INSIGHTS I Earlier this month, the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill was passed by the National Assembly and has now been sent to the National Council of the Provinces for consideration. This is a significant step towards the Bill being passed into law and therefore amending the Electricity Regulation Act 4 of 2006, the primary piece of legislation governing the generation, transmission, distribution, reticulation, trading and the import and export of electricity in South Africa. The Bill is set to completely overhaul the electricity supply industry in South Africa with the establishment of a hybrid or multi-market market model comprising market transactions, physical bilateral transactions, and regulated transactions (#HybridMarket). This report, compiled by Shamilah Grimwood, summarises the key features of the design and objects of the hybrid market as set out in the Bill, and the extent to which the challenges facing the electricity supply industry in South Africa may be resolved by the market transition mechanisms.

[Blog] Electricity milestone gives us encouragement to do more Last Friday marked 100 days since South Africa last experienced load shedding. This is the longest continuous period without load shedding since 2020. While this is a welcome milestone, it is not a reason to relax. Our electricity system remains vulnerable and we cannot yet rule out a possibility of further load shedding. Rather, this milestone provides encouragement for us to do more and to work faster to ensure a secure supply of electricity now and into the future. We have seen real progress in the implementation of the Energy Action Plan, which we initiated in July 2022, and are now witnessing some of the results of the cooperation between government, business and other social partners. Thanks to the diligent implementation by Eskom of its Generation Operational Recovery Plan as well as a stepped up maintenance schedule, there has been a marked improvement in the performance of the power stations that produce the bulk of South Africa’s electricity. https://lnkd.in/dUsJ-3dC

Inadequate power infrastructure remains a significant hindrance to the growth of Africa’s manufacturing sector. Many manufacturers in the region rely on expensive diesel generators to power their operations, which increases their overall costs and makes their products less competitive in global and local markets. This failure in the power sector of most African countries is a direct result of decades of neglect and poor planning by their governments. Their current power infrastructure is outdated and often unreliable, making it difficult for manufacturers to operate efficiently. If we genuinely want to boost Africa’s manufacturing industry and create a sustainable path to global competitiveness, among other things, we must prioritise investment in revitalising our power infrastructure. #Africa #Manufacturing #EconomicDevelopment #EnergyCrisis

With USAID and Power Africa funding and in support of Power Africa goals to advance economic growth and prosperity by adding new electricity connections, NARUC has assisted the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA) as it works to ensure a harmonized regulatory environment that fosters the development of a sustainable and reliable electricity market. The following two new reports will help to reinforce ERERA’s ability to make timely, accurate, and extensive data readily available to all stakeholders within the region. Transparency Procedure for ECOWAS ERERA: https://lnkd.in/e2Km7A3b ERERA Implementation Plan to Bolster Transparency and Data Availability in the Electricity Markets of West Africa: https://lnkd.in/ek_9FFi2 The Transparency Procedure seeks to enable stakeholders to make informed decisions, enhance market integrity, and contribute to the overall reliability and sustainability of the regional electricity ecosystem. Meanwhile, the Implementation Plan aims to establish clear, accessible, and reliable information-sharing mechanisms regarding market operations, regulatory compliance, and pricing. By referring to these reports, ERERA can advance toward its goal of ensuring transparency for electricity market participants and enhancing regional coordination to achieve a fully interconnected regional electricity market. #WestAfrica #knowledgesharing #electricitymarket #energyregulation

New research finds South Africa can take action to boost the deployment of grid-located batteries through better understanding of the sector, co-operative planning, increasing access to finance, and supporting localized production. While South Africans are already rapidly installing consumer batteries (located at homes and workplaces), grid batteries (storage installed on the grid) are an under-recognized part of the solution to the country’s electricity supply issues. Our new report, utilizing interviews with over 70 experts in the field, identifies a broad lack of understanding of battery opportunities, disjointed planning processes, and financial obstacles for energy storage projects as key factors constricting the roll out of grid batteries. The second in a two-part series examining the role energy storage can play in resolving South Africa’s recent energy crisis, the paper, Watts in Store Part 2: Creating an Enabling Environment for the Deployment of Grid Batteries in South Africa, recommends core steps policy-makers and stakeholders in the energy system may take to foster grid battery deployment. 👉 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/dJVh2xJy
