• As Officer Trainees who have behind you a lot of education and, in
some cases, work experience as well, we feel there should be no need
to go into this question. Yet, in case the rigour of studies or the
elation that came with your receiving the result has taken a little of
the structure away, here is a summary that may help bring back to the
fore what may have conveniently, albeit temporarily, receded to the
back of your thoughts.
AN ESSAY

• An essay is a written exposition on • Therefore, an essay allows

a given subject which presents the critical examination of an
writer’s thoughts in a logical and issue and showcases various
coherent manner. dimensions of the issue.
• The author is required to

General Instructions
• Candidates will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The
choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely
to the subject of the essay, to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion,
and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact
expression.
• Examiners will pay special attention to the candidate’s grasp of his
material, its relevance to the subject chosen, and to his ability to think
constructively and to present his ideas concisely, logically and
effectively.
The What and How
• The essay has three distinct parts viz the Introduction; the main Body/Discussion and finally the
Conclusion.
• INTRODUCTION :
• The opening paragraph or paragraphs generate interest in the topic. Use your creativity to write
informed and intelligent opening paragraphs and not general ones. Besides, please allow your creative

expression to leave its flavor in your essay.

shimmering with ideas, not a reiteration of all

that everyone already knows.
• CONCLUSION :
• The conclusion to the essay gives a comprehensive idea of what has been discussed and the final
thoughts of the author after due inquiry/reflection. The conclusion can also be a question or a series of
questions. However, these cannot appear arbitrarily. You should have built up your argument towards
those questions logically and they should reflect the depth of inquiry that you have indulged in.
Remember, questions can be rhetorical.
2 SPECIAL POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND!!!
• If you are unsure about the meaning of a word, please do look up a dictionary.
Sometimes old fashioned practices give us the surest way towards correct usage.
We do not appreciate incorrect or casual use of grammar. Please do not confuse
this with being creative. As you will have seen through reading your favourite
books, these are two different things.
• Remember that being civil servants, you are officers of the State and you cannot
criticize any policy of the State, let alone take an ideological path and debunk a
policy on that ground.
• Be informed that to be non-partisan does not mean to be dull or unintelligent. In
fact, as you will find, being non-partisan and unbiased allows for greater space for
creativity.
WRITING THE BODY OF ESSAY!!!
• The body of your essay should contain an analysis or at least contextual mention of some seminal
texts in the existing literature on the subject, it should discuss pertinent issues or questions and
shed light on the views of the author and the thought process that leads her/him to those views.
• The long and short of it is that you must have an ARGUMENT.
• By only repeating general ideas and what others have said, you
do not end up writing a good essay.
• You can use someone’s idea or quote, giving due credit to her in the references, and build your
own argument.

great writers (and officers) do not write

• Remember,

others’ thoughts mindlessly.

• Try to create work that is yours.
Never Plagiarize
• It is expected that you will submit
original work. It becomes very
clear to the reader that
the work is not original
when an essay is written
by putting together
random quotes from various
sources as the inconsistency in
style becomes apparent.
More on style
(which your essay should have plenty of)

• Every individual has his/her style of expression. However the

following is advised:
• Usually essays are written in third person singular. However,
narratives in the first person may be adopted if you have a flair for it.
• Pay attention to grammar and spelling.
• Short and simple sentences are preferable. Therefore, it is better to
spread out complex / compound sentences.
