[Overview]
Introduction to multimedia.
Multimedia Application.
Applications of multimedia.
Linear vs. Interactive multimedia
Multimedia terminology
Virtual reality (VR).

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
Multimedia is a combination of text,
graphic, sound, animation, and video.
It is delivered to the user by electronic or
digitally manipulated means.
A multimedia project development requires
creative, technical, organizational, and
business skills.

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
Collection of various media
text, graphics,
animation, audio
(sound) and video that
come together to form a single
unit.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
Multimedia becomes interactive
multimedia when a user is given the option
of controlling the elements.
Interactive multimedia is called
hypermedia when a user is provided a
structure of linked elements for navigation.
Multimedia developers develop multimedia
projects.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
The software vehicle, the messages, and
the content together constitute a
multimedia project.
A multimedia project shipped to end-users
with or without instructions is called a
multimedia title.
A project can also be launched on the
Web.

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
Multimedia projects can be linear or
nonlinear.
Projects that are not interactive are called
linear.
Projects where users are given
navigational control are called non-linear
and user-interactive.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
Authoring tools are used to merge
multimedia elements into a project.
These software tools are designed to
manage individual multimedia elements
and provide user interaction.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
The primary media for delivering
multimedia projects are:
Compact disc read-only (CD-ROM).
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD).
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Compact Disc Read-Only (CD-ROM)]
CD-ROM is the most cost-effective
distribution medium for multimedia
projects.
It can contain up to 80 minutes of full-
screen video or sound.
CD burners are used for reading discs and
converting the discs to audio, video, and
data formats.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)]
Multilayered DVD technology increases
the capacity of current optical technology
to 18 GB.
DVD authoring and integration software is
used to create interactive front-end menus
for films and games.
DVD burners are used for reading discs
and converting the disc to audio, video,
and data formats.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Introduction to Multimedia]
Copper wire, glass fiber, and radio/cellular
technologies also serve as means for
delivering multimedia files across a
network.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Multimedia Application]
A computer based interactive communication
process that incorporates media elements such
as text, graphics, sound, animation and video
on a computer.
Interactivity is the key component to deliver an
interactive multimedia application
Interactivity ability of user to interact with the
program
The ability of the user to interact with the program
is perhaps the single most critical features of
multimedia.

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Multimedia Application]
Multimedia application can be either linear or
non-linear
Linear
Not interactive
Starting at a beginning and running through the end
Eg. Montage on TV
Non-linear
Interactive
Ability of end user to interact and control the
application
Eg. Games software

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Multimedia Application]
All these media are structured in such a
way that the audience has control over
their presentation
..is when end users are allowed to control
what & when the elements are delivered

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Applications Of Multimedia]
Multimedia is a very effective presentation
and sales tool.
Multimedia in business
Multimedia in schools
Multimedia at home
Multimedia in public places
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Applications of Multimedia]
Business - Business applications for
multimedia include presentations training,
marketing, advertising, product demos,
databases, catalogues, instant messaging,
and networked communication.
Schools - Educational software can be
developed to enrich the learning process.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Applications of Multimedia]
Home - Most multimedia projects reach
the homes via television sets or monitors
with built-in user inputs.
Public places - Multimedia will become
available at stand-alone terminals or
kiosks to provide information and help.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Interactive Multimedia]
Interactive multimedia is when user are
allowed to control what & when the elements are
delivered.
Hypermedia is interactive multimedia when a
structure of linked elements through which the
user can navigate.
Virtual reality is interactive multimedia to the
fullest extension.
Hypertext is when words are keyed or indexed
to other words. The text part of this term
represent the projects content and meaning,
rather then the graphical presentation.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Multimedia Terminologies]
Multimedia developers
Multimedia title
Storyboarding
Authoring tools
Graphical user interface (GUI)

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Multimedia Terminologies]
Multimedia developers : the people who weave
multimedia elements into meaningful tapestries
Multimedia title : if the project will be shipped or sold to
consumers or end users, typically in a box or on the
Internet, with or without instructions
Storyboarding : determining how a user will interact with
and navigate through the content of a project
Authoring tools : these software tools are designed to
managed individual multimedia elements and provide
multimedia interaction
Graphical User Interface (GUI) : the sum of what gets
played back and how it is presented to the viewer

Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Virtual Reality (VR)]
Virtual reality is an extension of
multimedia.
It uses the basic multimedia elements of
imagery, sound, and animation.
It requires terrific computing horsepower to
be realistic.
Chapter 1: What is Multimedia?
[Virtual Reality (VR)]
In VR, cyberspace is made up of
thousands of geometric objects plotted in
three-dimensional space.
The standards for transmitting VR in
Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML)
documents have been developed on the
World Wide Web.
VRML documents have the file extension
.wrl.
