QUESTION 1

a) Determine whether the numerical value is a parameter or statistic:

i) A recent study done by the alumni of UiTM indicated that the median annual salary
of 15,000 of its 500,000 graduates was RM50,000.
ii) The average salary of all assembly-line operators at the Honda car manufacturing
plant in Pegoh. Alor Gajah was RM1,800.
iii) The average weight of every 8th person entering a mall within an hour period was
67kg.

b) Identify the type of variables below and its level of measurement:

i) Number on the jersey of a girls’ soccer team.


ii) Number of pages in your Introduction to Statistics textbook.
iii) Rating given by 50 random customers in a fruit shop is either Good, Bad or
Average.
(3 marks)

c) Assume that a local garment manufacturer has 2,700 employees. The personnel
manager then decides to obtain the employees’ feedback on the company’s
performance to provide a better working environment for them. The manager chooses to
sample only 300 employees because of time constraint.

i) State the population and sampling frame for the study.

ii) Suggest the best data collection method for this study and give ONE (1)
disadvantage of using the method mentioned.

iii) A questionnaire is to be designed for this survey. Suggest TWO (2) questions that
can be used to measure the employees’ satisfaction towards the facilities provided
by the manufacturer using these two scale measurements: ordinal & ratio. (Your
answer MUST NOT be a demographic question)

The manager chooses to systematically sample 300 employees out of 2700 employees
in the factory.

iv) What is the sampling interval?

v) If the number 8 was the first randomly drawn number, what would be the first 5
numbers of the sample?

vi) Give ONE (1) disadvantage of using sampling technique mentioned.

QUESTION 2

a) The following table provides the information on the number of HFMD infection cases
reported according to five states for Week 23, in 2022. Based on the data below,
construct a pie chart and give your comment.

b) Drivers were surveyed to determine their rest time taken at the Rest & Recreation (R&R)
area when they travelled back to their hometowns, during the Hari Raya holidays. A
random sample of 50 drivers was selected, and the time taken by each driver to stop at
the R&R were summarized as follows:

i) Construct a ‘less than’ ogive for the above data

ii) From the ogive obtained in (i), estimate the value of X if 50% of the drivers took
more than X minutes to stop at the R&R, and another 50% of the drivers took less
than X minutes.

iii) Find the mean and the standard deviation of the time taken by each driver to stop at
the R&R.

iv) Compute the Pearson’s coefficient of skewness and describe the shape of the
distribution.

A study was conducted to investigate the relationship between birth weight (in kilograms)
and pregnancy age (in weeks) for newborn babies. The data are as follow:

a) Draw a scatter diagram for the above data and interpret the relationship between the
two variables.

b) Calculate the product moment correlation efficient between the birth weight and
pregnancy age. Comment on the result obtained.

c) Find the least squares regression equation.

d) Interpret the value of the slope obtained in (c).

e) Calculate the coefficient of determination and explain its meaning.

f) Predict the birth weight of the newborn given that the pregnancy age is 39.4 week.

iii) The higher occupancy rate at Merrinton Hotel during weekends compared to the
rate during weekdays.
iv) Affordable smartphone sales shoot up as demand grows due to e-learning needs.
v) The income of self-employed falls dramatically due to recession.

a) The probability of Johan taking a bus to work is 0.25. If he takes a bus, the probability of
him being late for work is 0.65. If he does not take a bus, the probability of him being
late is 0.35.

i) Construct a tree diagram for the above information.

b) A team consists of 5 members to be formed from 10 students and 5 lecturers. Find the
