Growth Drivers of EV 2-wheelers in India

Rising Fuel Prices
Fluctuating fuel prices, combined with the volatility in global oil
markets, have made conventional fuel-powered vehicles less
economical to operate. Electric 2-wheelers, on the other hand,
offer lower running costs than petrol or diesel vehicles.

Reducing Battery Costs

The cost of lithium-ion batteries, which are crucial components

ts
of electric vehicles, has been steadily decreasing in recent

Insigh
years due to growth in production capacity across all parts of
the battery value chain, from raw materials and components

On
to battery cells and packs.

ad
Re
According to BloombergNEF’s annual lithium-ion battery price
survey, average pack prices fell from $161/kWh in 2022 to
$139/kWh in 2023. Battery pack prices are further expected to
fall below $100/kWh in 2027. This reduction in battery costs has
made EVs more affordable for consumers, leading to greater
adoption of electric 2-wheelers.

Technological Advancements in EV 2-Wheelers

Advancements in battery technology have improved the
performance and range of electric 2-wheelers by providing longer
battery life and faster charging times. Result? Lesser consumer
anxiety and higher adoption of EVs.

Growth Drivers of EV 2-Wheelers in India

Government Initiatives
The government of India has introduced several initiatives to drive
the growth of EV 2-wheelers market in the country. These initiatives
aim to address various challenges such as high upfront costs,
limited infrastructure, and consumer awareness:

Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric

Vehicles (FAME) Initiative
With a budget of Rs. 10,000 crore, this initiative supports
electrification of public & shared transportation, and incentivises

ts
buyers to reduce their cost of purchasing vehicles. It also granted

Insigh
Rs. 1,000 crore incentives for the development of EV charging
stations under the FAME II scheme. 2,877 public charging stations

On
have been installed in 68 cities across India. Private players have

ad
also added 3,000 charging stations under this initiative.

Re
Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024
Launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), EMPS 2024 came
into effect on 1st April 2024 with an outlay of Rs. 500 Crore to provide
subsidies for approximately 3.72 lakh electric two wheelers. It also
provides incentives of Rs. 10,000 on every electric two wheeler
(provided they have advanced batteries).

Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI)

This intends to improve exports and generate economies of scale,
helping big domestic and international manufacturers develop
competitive ACC battery production in India. The government
invested $2.5 Billion to establish local manufacturing capacity of 50
GWh of Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC).

Battery Waste Management Rules

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change published
the Battery waste Management Rules in 2022 to ensure that battery
waste is handled in an environmentally responsible manner.
The regulations stimulate the establishment of new firms and
entrepreneurship in the collection, recycling, and repair of spent
batteries. By demanding a minimum degree of material recovery
from used batteries in the recommendations, new technologies,

ts
investments, and business opportunities will be brought to the

GST and Other Taxes

The government has reduced GST on EVs from 12% to 5%. GST on
chargers/ charging stations for EVs has also been reduced from 18%
to 5%. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) announced
that the battery-operated vehicles will be given green license plates

states to waive road tax on EVs, which in turn will help reduce the
initial cost of the EVs.

Benefits of EV 2-Wheelers

Reduced dependence on fossil fuels

The availability of fossil fuels is limited, and their use is
destroying our planet. EVs can convert around 60% of
the electrical energy from the grid to power the wheels,
but petrol or diesel cars can only convert 17%-21% of the
energy stored in the fuel to the wheels.

Zero Tailpipe Emissions

ts
Fully electric vehicles have zero tailpipe emissions

Insigh (emissions of gaseous pollutants), but on average,

petrol or diesel vehicles emit almost 3 times more

adOn carbon dioxide than the average EV.

Re Lower Operating Costs

Electric 2-wheelers have lower operating costs
compared to petrol or diesel vehicles as they use
electricity to charge their batteries instead of fossil
fuels. The electricity cost can be reduced further if
charging is done with the help of renewable energy
sources installed at home, such as solar panels.

Reduced Noise Pollution

Electric motors are quieter than internal combustion
engines, resulting in reduced noise pollution. In fact,
electric vehicles are so silent that manufacturers have
to add false sounds to make them safe for
pedestrians.

Read Charging Infrastructure

The low availability and accessibility of charging
infrastructure, especially in rural and semi-urban
areas, is a key challenge for the widespread
adoption of electric 2-wheelers.

Competition from Conventional Vehicles

Traditional fuel-powered 2-wheelers dominate
the market in India, and strong competition from
established manufacturers can pose a challenge
to electric 2-wheeler brands. Convincing
consumers to switch from conventional vehicles
to electric ones may require compelling value
propositions and incentives.

Challenges in Implementing Charging

Infrastructure in India

Insufficient Public Charging Infrastructure

As per the estimates of the Bureau of Energy
Efficiency, India should house 46,397 EV fast
charging stations in 9 cities by 2030. But currently
we only have 12,146 public EV charging stations.

Lack of Power Grid

Charging electric vehicles means high demand

sights
for electricity. But, India currently experiences

In
regular power cuts, especially in rural or

adOnunderdeveloped areas.

Re Geographical Barriers
India’s vast landscapes, from mountains, and
jungles, to rivers, make it difficult to set up
charging stations. For example, places with heavy
rainfall may need charging stations capable of
handling heavy water flow.

Result?
These challenges make the implementation of efficient
EV charging infrastructure difficult, and lead to range
anxiety. The fear of running out of charge without
access to a nearby charging station is a nightmare for
potential buyers.

Whitespace Opportunities for New Players to

Enter the EV 2-Wheeler Industry

Corporate and Fleet Solutions

Targeting corporate clients and fleet operators with
tailored electric 2-wheeler solutions can be tapped into
by new brands. Brands can offer fleet management
solutions to businesses transitioning to electric mobility.

Battery Swapping Solutions

Battery swapping is like a petrol pump for an EV - the

sights
discharged battery can be exchanged with a fully
charged battery to save on charging times. Brands that

invest in developing efficient and cost-effective battery

d
swapping solutions for E2Ws can address range anxiety

Rea concerns (particularly for long-distance travel).

Rural Market Penetration

Adoption of E2Ws is rising in semi-urban and rural
areas, thanks to subsidised power. But, this market
remains largely untapped. Brands can focus on
making models that are suitable for rural conditions,
like rugged build quality, longer battery life, and
affordability.

Customisation and Personalisation

Brands can explore opportunities to allow customers
to choose from a range of colors, accessories, and
features to create a tailored riding experience for
electric 2-wheelers.
