UNIT 7: ARTISTS

LESSON 7E - WORD SKILLS: INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:

1. Knowledge

- Comprehend and analyze an article about a famous experimental piece of music,


focusing on its historical context and artistic significance.

- Acquire and internalize vocabulary related to various musical genres and aspects of
music.

2. Competences

- Demonstrate proficiency in using indefinite pronouns, especially in the context of


offers and requests.

- Engage in conversations about tastes in music, utilizing appropriate vocabulary and


grammar.

3. Personal qualities

- Exhibit creativity and open-mindedness when discussing and describing different


genres of music.

- Foster an appreciation for the diversity and complexity of musical expressions across
various genres.

- Grade 11 textbook, Unit 7, Word skills

- Computer connected to the Internet

- Projector / TV

III. PROCEDURES

1. ACTIVITY 1: LEAD-IN (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Introduce the new lesson and set the scene for Ss to acquire new language.

- Get students' attention at the beginning of the class.

- Activate background knowledge.

- Students can gain more confidence and interest in the lesson.

b. Content:

- Exercises 1 and 2.

c. Products:

- Students work in groups.

d. Organization

When do you listen to music? (1 mins)

- Ask students: When you are doing your homework or Responses from Ss
revising for a test, do you listen to music or background
sounds, or do you prefer silence? Why?

- Students discuss the questions in pairs.

- Ask a few students to share their ideas with the class.

Exercise 1 (2 mins)

- Go through the music genres together and check their


pronunciation, particularly folk /fəʊk/ and techno
/ˈteknəʊ/.

- Play the recording for students to match the genres

with the excerpts.

- Check answers as a class. Ask students which excerpt


they like the most.

Exercise 2 (2 mins)

- Focus attention on the title of the article.

- Ask students what they expect experimental music to


sound like. Elicit a few ideas, e.g. music with unusual
melodies or instruments. - Students read the article and
discuss the question.

- Check the answer as a class. Then ask: Would you be


interested in hearing 4’33”? Why / Why not?

- Elicit a few answers.

- Teacher observes the groups and gives feedback.

2. ACTIVITY 2: PRESENTATION (15 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Students learn the form.

b. Content:

- Exercises 3 and 4.

c. Products:

- Ss discuss with their friends, do exercises in the book.

d. Organization

Exercise 3 (7 mins)

- Ss can use the right indefinite pronouns.

b. Content:

- Exercise 5.

- Students complete the exercises in their books correctly.

- Ss talk to their friends about the musical genres they enjoy listening to.

b. Content:

- Exercise 6.

- Students discuss, take notes and report orally.

Exercise 6 (10 mins)

- Go through the words for different aspects of music Responses from Ss.

the words to describe the genres they like listening to.

a. Wrap-up

can understand a text about experimental music. I can understand and use indefinite
pronouns. I can discuss and describe different genres of music.
