Based on Given:
1) 72 °F = 22 °C 5) -48 °F = -44 °C
°C = 5 / 9 (72 - 32) = 5 / 9 (40) = 22 °C = 5 / 9 (-48 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-80) = -44
2) -24 °F = -31 °C 6) 154 °F = 68 °C
°C = 5 / 9 (-24 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-56) = -31 °C = 5 / 9 (154 - 32) = 5 / 9 (122) = 68
3) -52 °F = -47 °C 7) 108 °F = 42 °C
°C = 5 / 9 (-52 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-84) = -47 °C = 5 / 9 (108 - 32) = 5 / 9 (76) = 42
4) 120 °F = 49 °C 8) -13 °F = -25°C
°C = 5 / 9 (120 - 32) = 5 / 9 (88) = 49 °C = 5 / 9 (-13 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-45) = -25
Convert Fahrenheit into Celsius. Round the answers to nearest whole number.
1) 56 °F = 13 °C 5) 98 °F = 37 °C
°C = 5 / 9 (56 - 32) = 5 / 9 (24) = 13 °C = 5 / 9 (98 - 32) = 5 / 9 (66) = 37
2) 15 °F = -9 °C 6) -30 °F = -34 °C
°C = 5 / 9 (15 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-17) = -9 °C = 5 / 9 (-30 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-62) = -34
3) -28 °F = -33 °C 7) 125 °F = 52 °C
°C = 5 / 9 (-28 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-60) = -33 °C = 5 / 9 (125 - 32) = 5 / 9 (93) = 52
4) 12 °F = -11 °C 8) 80 °F = 27 °C
°C = 5 / 9 (12 - 32) = 5 / 9 (-20) = -11 °C = 5 / 9 (80 - 32) = 5 / 9 (48) = 27
Questions:
1. What is a temperature sensor?
- Temperature sensors detect the degree of coolness or hotness in an object. A
temperature meter's operation is determined by the voltage across the diode. The
temperature change is proportional to the resistance of the diode.
The lower the resistance, the lower the temperature, and vice versa. The resistance
across the diode is measured, and the measurement is converted into readable
temperature units that are displayed in numeric form over readout units.
2. As a student, why do you need to know about temperature measurements as a
preparation to go onboard ship?
- As a student preparing to board a ship, developing a thorough understanding of
temperature measurement and its applications is critical. A proper training and
knowledge will kept me aware what is the difference from normal to abnormal
temperature of different machineries because it will also serve as a basis of insurance if
ever what happen to the machinery when it had a failure mechanism. In order to prevent
those mistakes, proper discipline when handling the machineries and following the right
guidance of the officer in watch.
3. Which system on board ship mostly temperature measurement is very usable? Why?
- Main engine, Auxiliary engine, gas turbines etc.: Temperature sensors monitor the
temperature in engine and generator cooling systems. These systems are critical for
maintaining a constant operating temperature in the engine and avoiding overheating or
equipment damage. The likelihood of failure-related problems increases without
accurate and early detection of temperature changes, posing safety and reliability
concerns. If a vessel is not monitored correctly, the consequences of undetected
failures can be severe, posing extreme safety risks.
Conclusion/Recommendation:
In addition, precise temperature readings are necessary for complying with international
regulations governing maritime transport. Failure to comply with these regulations can
result in fines and legal consequences.
Therefore, it is imperative that all crew members receive proper training in temperature
measurement techniques and that ships are equipped with reliable temperature
measuring instruments. By doing so, we can ensure safe and efficient maritime
operations while protecting the well-being of crew members and complying with
international regulations.
