Chapter 1: Shopping online!

Every year, more businesses are offering their goods to online shoppers. They post their online catalogs on the
Internet and wait for customers to arrive at the virtual checkout with their credit card numbers ready. It's a fairly
inexpensive way to do business, and the virtual store is open 24 hours a day to anyone with access to the
Internet. But is online shopping as good for consumers as it is for businesses?

Online shopping offers consumers several advantages. (a). Buying from an online store is very convenient for
people with a home computer. Consumers don't need to take a bus downtown or drive a car and pay for
gasoline and parking. The Internet also offers a wide selection of products. Customers can compare products
and prices from several different businesses before making a decision about what to buy. At some sites, they
can even read reviews from other shoppers to help them decide whether a product is good or a business is
reliable. (b).

There are also several disadvantages associated with online shopping. Customers cannot actually touch or try
on a product before they buy it, so they may not be sure about the product's quality. Shipping is also a concern
since most products purchased online must be sent to the customer. (c) . Online shoppers also worry about
privacy when they provide their credit card numbers and other personal information over the Internet. (d) .
When shopping online, using good judgment is extremely important.

Chapter 2: Living with robots
1 In the movies, they look like men made of metal. They walk or roll in a slow, awkward way and
speak in mechanical voices. Today, however, real robots are all around us, doing work that
humans cannot do--or don't want to do. They may have "arms," but they don't look like human
beings.
2 The difference between robots and other machines is that robots are able to get information
about the world around them by using sensors--small electronic devices that let robots "see" and
"feel" their environment. Robots use the information they receive to do things like put a piece of
chocolate in a box right-side up in its proper place. That kind of work is what today's robots do
best. They can perform the same task in exactly the same way thousands of times every day, and
they never take a break for lunch!
3 Robots are also useful in dangerous situations. One widely used type of robot approaches objects
that could be bombs and allows experts to see and touch the objects from a safe distance. If an
object really is a bomb, no human beings are hurt if it explodes.
4 Doctors are also using robots nowadays. In microsurgery, robots change the natural movements
of surgeons' hands into tiny and precise movements inside patients' bodies. Some hospitals are
using robots to move equipment and supplies from place to place, and some medical schools are
using robotic "patients" to train future doctors. Medical students can practice procedures and the
robots respond in the same ways as real people!
