Read the description of ‘virtual voice assistants’ below.


Virtual voice assistants are machines that can both listen/understand and speak. They are
connected to your tablet or smartphone, and they answer commands and questions like, “Tell me
the news headlines” or “Order a taxi for me to come in ten minutes.” They can also be linked to
devices in the home like the cooker, the front door lock, or the central heating system so that you
can control them with a simple voice command.

1. What are the benefits of this kind of device and who could they be most useful for? (e.g.
anyone, children, old people, people with disabilities)
2. What other things do you think these devices could do to help people in the home?
3. Are there any disadvantages to using them? If so, what?
