Learning objectives: 10.4.5 Deduce meaning from context in extended texts on a wide range of familiar general and
curricular topics,and some unfamiliar topics
10.5.5 - develop with support coherent arguments supported when necessary by examples and reasons for a wide range of
written genres in familiar general and curricular topics
Reading. Task 1. Read the texts and mark the sentences TRUE or FALSE
AI for everything
We now live in the age of AI. Hundreds of millions of people have interacted directly with generative tools like
ChatGPT that produce text, images, videos, and more from prompts. Their popularity has reshaped the tech industry,
making OpenAI a household name and compelling Google, Meta, and Microsoft to invest heavily in the technology.
Super-efficient solar cells
Solar power is being rapidly deployed around the world, and it’s key to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. But
most of the sunlight that hits today’s panels isn’t being converted into electricity. Adding a layer of tiny crystals could
make solar panels more efficient.
The first gene-editing treatment
New treatments based on CRISPR have been in the works for years. In the final weeks of 2023, one from Vertex
became the first to earn regulatory approval in both the UK and the US for its ability to cure sickle-cell disease, a life-
threatening condition. It won’t be the last.
Apple Vision Pro
Apple will start shipping its first mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, this year. Its killer feature is the highest-
resolution display ever made for such a device. Will there be a killer app? It’s early, but the world’s most valuable
company has made a bold bet that the answer is yes.
1. AI tools can create text, pictures, and even videos based on what you tell them. _________
2. The rise of tools that create new things from instructions has changed the tech industry so that big companies
like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are pouring money into this technology. _________
3. While solar panels capture a lot of sunlight to make electricity, they convert everything. _________
4. Tiny crystals might be the key to boosting the efficiency of solar panels. _________
5. A new treatment using CRISPR gene-editing technology, developed by Vertex, became the first ever to be
approved for curing sickle cell disease, receiving a green light from both the UK and US regulators. _________
6. Apple Vision Pro primarily focuses on enhancing gaming experiences for users. ______

Tasks for the Summative Assessment for term 3
LISTENING
Task.1 Listen to the recording twice and write if the sentences are True or False.
Task.2 Read the text and choose from sentences A-F the one which fits each gap (1-6)
Brain implants
A man who can't move his hands used his thoughts to write on a computer screen. 1. ________.
Scientists from Stanford University implanted two tiny sensors into the man's brain. 2________.
The man wants to be anonymous, so scientists call him T5. He became paralyzed after a spinal
cord injury ten years ago. 3.________. He can write about 18 words per minute. This is five
words slower than the average person writing a text message on a smartphone.
The mindwriting system is simple, but it uses a lot of advanced technology. 4. ________.
Sensors in his brain detected activity as he imagined writing. A computer turned this activity
into text on a screen. 5. ________. A researcher hopes his system will help millions of paralyzed
people to write again. It might also help people who cannot speak. The researcher said: "The
goal is to restore their ability to communicate by text." 6.___________.

Scientists have made the smallest electric motor ever created. It is a feat of scientific genius that
most of us could never even try to understand. Dr. Charles Sykes and his team from America’s
Tufts University created the motor from a single molecule just a billionth of a metre wide. Dr
Sykes is in contact with the Guinness Book of World Records to have his motor recognised as
the smallest ever. The current world-record holder is a 200-nanometre-long nano-tube made
from carbon. Dr. Sykes’ creation is an incredible 200 times smaller. Naturally, the researchers
hope their creation has uses for mankind. It will be used to power the tiniest machines ever built,
and be used by doctors in nano-surgery and robotic surgery. It is the first time an electric motor
has been made from a single molecule. Scientists can make molecules convert energy from light
and chemical reactions into movement, but Dr. Sykes’ invention is the first to be classed as a
motor – something that can continually generate power. There is some mind-boggling science
behind Sykes’ device. A combination of chemicals and metals produces the miniscule motor
that rotates 50 times a second. Dr. Sykes was excited about the future of his discovery, saying:
"The next thing to do is to get the thing to do work that we can measure - to [link] it to other
molecules, lining them up next to one another so they're like miniature cogwheels.”
