STEPS IN EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE :-

1. Ask a question
Converting the need for information (about
prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, therapy,
causation, etc) into an answerable question
2. Find information/evidence to answer
question
Tracking down the best evidence with which to
answer that question
3. Critically appraise the information/evidence
Critically appraising that evidence for its
validity (closeness to the truth), impact (size of
the effect), and applicability (usefulness in our
clinical practice)
4. Integrate appraised evidence with own
clinical expertise and patient’s preferences
Integrating the critical appraisal with our
clinical expertise and with our patient's unique
biology, values and circumstances

MODELS OF EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE:-

STETLER MODEL-The Stetler model of research

utilization helps practitioners assess how research
findings and other relevent evidence can be applied in
practice. This model examines how to use evidence to
create formal change within organizations, as well how
individual practitioners can use research on an informal
basis as part of critical thinking and reflective practice.
The model links research use, as a first step, with
evidence-informed practice.The Stetler model provides
a way to think about the relationship between research
use and evidence-informed practice. These two
concepts are not the same. Integrating both concepts
enhances the overall application of research.
This model consists of five phases (Stetler, 2001, p.
276):

 Phase I: Preparation
 Phase II: Validation
 Phase III: Comparative Evaluation/Decision
Making
 Phase IV: Translation/Application
 Phase V: Evaluation

2. IOWA model
Iowa Model of EBP-. The Iowa Model focuses on the
entire healthcare system (e.g., patient, practitioner,
infrastructure) to implement and guide practice
decisions based on best available research and
evidence.
ESSENTIAL STEPS-
1. -Identify either a “problem-focused trigger” or
“knowledge-focused trigger” that will generate the
need for a practice change.
2. -Determine whether the “trigger” is a healthcare
organization priority.
3. -Reflect a team’s topic of interest and include
interested stakeholders. The team will search, appraise,
and synthesize literature related to the topic.
4. -Evaluate the availability and merit (e.g., level of
evidence, quality of evidence) of evidence. If evidence
availability and merit are lacking, conduct research.
5. If credible and reliable evidence is available, pilot the
practice change.
6. -Appraise pilot for level of success. If pilot is
successful, disseminate findings within the
organization and implement recommended change into
practice.

3. Rosswurm and Larrabee (1999), at the University

of West Virginia, developed a six-step model to
facilitate a shift from traditional and intuition-driven
practice to implement evidence-based changes into
practice. The model has been tested in the acute care
clinical setting, but the authors think it is adaptable to
primary care settings. The following are the six steps in
the model

STEPS-

-Assess the need for change in practice by comparing

practice 2. -Synthesize the best evidence (research and contextual EBP?
evidence).
3. -Design a change in practice.
4. -Implement and evaluate the change in practice,
including processes and outcomes.
5. Integrate and maintain the change in practice using
diffusion strategies.

BARRIERS TO EBP
 Lack of value for research in practice .
 Difficulty in bringing change.
 Lack of administrative support
 Lack of knowledge.
 Lack of time for research.

 Complexity of the research regarding evidence
based practice.
 Organization have failed to motivate or

 There is a shortage of role models nurse who
can be evaluated for their success in using or
promoting the use of research in clinical
practice.

ADVANTAGES OF EBP

14.  Provide better patient outcomes.
To summarize  Ebp increases the efficiency of nurses.
the topic  Making decision based on knowledge that is
backed by
research.
 It keeps nursing practice current to the new
trends and updated guidelines of care.
 It provides variations in practice because it can
help determine high quality cast effective
intervention that actually work.
 It promotes high quality and cast effective
intervention and treatment.
 Using EBP to provide care to patients increases
the nurses confidence.
