Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses about the methodology conducted by thye researchers to gather data

necessary for the study. It specifically focuses on research design, participant of the study, data

collection tool, data gathering procedures, and data analysis.

Research Design

For the purposes of this research, the researchers has decided to use one of the two classic

sciences research tools, which is the survey questionnaires. The questionnaires will be distributed

among Grade 11 & 12 Travel Services students who are taking the four specialized subjects that

are required for Travel Services strand which are the Front Office, Travel Services, Attraction and

Theme Parks Tourism and lastly Food and Beverage.

Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical,

or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and survey, or by

manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques. Quantitative research

focuses on gathering numerical data and generalizing it across groups of people or to explain a

particular phenomenon (Babbie, 2010). As a descriptive study, it collected detail and factual

information to describe existing phenomenon. The main purpose of descriptive research is to

provide appropriate and valid information of the topic. It does not answer questions about

how/when/why/the characteristics occurred. Rather it addresses the “what” questions (Chynthia,

2014).

Participants of the Study

The researchers considered the Grades 11 & Grade 12 travel services students of Lyceum

of the Philippines University-Laguna, They were the chosen respondents of the topic of

“Contribution of the Specialized Subjects to the Preparation of Travel Services students of Lyceum

of the Philippines University-Laguna”. In this study the researchers used a total sampling, it is a

type of purposive sampling technique that involves examining the entire population that have a

particular set of characteristics (e.g., specific attributes/traits, experience, knowledge, skills,

exposure to an event, etc.) (Lund Research, 2012).

They are the ones who know better and currently take specialized subject of Travel

Services strand. Thus, the research perceives them to give the best answer for the given questions.

The survey was conducted at PHL Building and JPL Building of Lyceum of the Philippines

University of Laguna, located at KM 54 National Highway Makiling, Calamba City, and Laguna.

Data Collection Tools

For this study, the survey-questionnaire instruments were used to achieve the main

objective of the study. A self administered questionnaire was distributed to Grade 11 & Grade 12

travel services students.

In conducting the survey, questionnaires were given to the total number of travel services

students which include the Grade 11 and 12 travel services students. The questionnaires were in

the likert scale form and in a checklist form. It is composed of 7 sections which were about the

demographic profile of the respondents, their level of preparedness in different skilss that is needed

in the Hospitality Industry (1-Poor, 2-Average, 3-Above average, 4-Excellent), Contributing

factors towards preparation that is in the checklist, and lastly, and the contribution of specialized

subjects (1-Stronly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-Agree, 4-Strongly Disagree).

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers personally administered the research instruments to the respondents. They

conferred and discussed the significance of the study and accomplished the distribution of the

instrument properly. The respondents were given enough time of 15 minutes to accomplish the

forms. The researchers went from Grade 11 to Grade 12 Travel Services classes to collecting the

accomplished questionnaires. The results were tallied and tabulated. These data become the bases

of analysis and interpretation.

Data Analysis

The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of sex and age were determined using

frequency and percentage method. The frequency is the number of times a value of variable has

been observed and percentage is a value for a variable in relation to the whole population as

fraction of one hundred (Lavrakas, 2010).

A descriptive research design was used for this study in order to know and describe the

contribution of specialized subjects of travel services students to their preparedness in the

hospitality industry. This design enabled the researchers to collect factual information to describe

the existing phenomenon. The researchers used this design to gather information to complete all

the data that were needed to assess the “Contribution of Specialized Subjects to the Preparedness

of Travel Services students of Lyceum of the Philippines University-Laguna in the Hospitality

Industry”.

In determining the contribution of the specialized subjects to the preparation of Travel

Services students of Lyceum of the Philippines University-Laguna, the Likert scale has been used.

It used a four-point scale, each point corresponding to Likert item.

Point Scale Verbal Interpretation

4 3.50-4.00 Excellent
3 2.50-3.49 Above Average
2 1.50-2.49 Average
1 1.00-1.49 Poor

Point Scale Verbal Interpretation

4 3.50-4.00 Strongly agree
3 2.50-3.49 agree
2 1.50-2.49 disagree
1 1.00-1.49 Strongly disagree

To interpret the data effectively, the researchers will employ these statistical

treatment/method. The percentage, frequency and weighted mean are the tools use to interpret

data.

Frequency and Percentage will employ to determine the frequency counts and percentage

distribution of personal related variables of the respondents.

Formula: %= (F / N) x 100

% is the percentage

F is the frequency

N is the total number of respondents

100 is a constant value

Weighted mean will determine the average of the respondents who answered in one of the

given questions.

Formula:
Σwx
Weighted Mean =
N

W is the points (4, 3, 2, 1)

X is the number of the respondents per weight.

N is the total number of respondents.
