RESEARCH DESIGN

This part of the research paper discusses the data gathering as well as the methods

used to conduct the study. It is composed of research method, research locale, nature of

the subject and respondents, data and its sources, research instrument and the procedure.

Research Method

The specific design or approach that this study utilized in gathering information are

surveys and interviews. Surveys will be conducted in order to collect and provide

sufficient data as it can reach a larger population. Meanwhile, interviews among students

involved in their family business will be done to support the data collected from the

results of the survey with the purpose of determining the perception of Grade 12 ABM

Students of University of the East- Caloocan on Business Dynasty S.Y. 2018-2019.

Research Locale

The Researchers conducted the study entitled: "The Perception of Grade 12 ABM

Students of University of the East- Caloocan on Business Dynasty S.Y. 2018-2019" at the

University of the East - Caloocan campus particularly focused on the Elementary and

High School Department- Senior High School Level. In participation of: Grade 12 ABM

students at the College of Engineering Building. The institution is located at 105 Samson

Road, Caloocan City, Philippines Below is the location map of University of the East –

Nature of the Subject and Respondents

The researchers randomly selected 100 students to participate in their study entitled

"The Perception of Grade 12 ABM Students of University of the East- Caloocan on

Business Dynasty S.Y. 2018-2019". The respondents must be 16-19 years old, Filipino

citizen, male or female that are students who belong to Grade 12 ABM strand in

University of the East – Caloocan 105 Samson Road, Caloocan City, Philippines. Aside

from that, the 10 respondents selected by the researchers who will participate in the

interview must have family business.

31

Data and their Sources

The researchers used primary and secondary data for the research study. For primary

sources, the researchers conducted a face-to-face interview to the respondents who have a

family business. Through conducting an interview, the researchers found out the insights

and opinions of those respondents regarding the business dynasty. In addition, survey

questionnaires were also distributed directly to the Grade 12 ABM students of the

University of the East-Caloocan that will also serve as a primary data. For secondary

sources, the researchers gathered some related literature and studies, both from foreign

and local source that guides the researchers in conducting the whole research. Both

primary and secondary data are helpful for the researchers to arrive at accurate and

specific results.

Research Instruments

A researcher-made was used to gather the data needed for the study. The researcher

used a content validated questionnaire and a face-to-face interview as research

instrument. The draft was drawn out based on the researchers’ readings, previous studies,

professional literature, published and unpublished thesis relevant to the study. The

questionnaire is a Likert type scale and its first part consist of questions about the profile

of the students. This include the name, age, gender and their strand. The last part includes

all the necessary information we needed to know to support our research.

After conducting a survey questionnaire, the researcher chose 10 people who has

family business to participate in a face-to-face interview and ask them the same question
32

the researcher have in the survey questionnaire. Their answer provide a more reliable and

proven answer since their perception is more important because they have the experience

and knowledge regarding family business.

The survey questionnaire was distributed to 10 people in different section and the

researcher chose one participant for each section to take part in a face-to-face interview.

A total of 15 question were made by the researcher to get a sufficient data needed for the

study. In addition, the questionnaire form and the interview question was validated by a

consultant/professor before it laid on to the study.

Procedure

Data Gathering

The researchers formulated survey questionnaires to accumulate information

required for the research study. The questionnaire is based on the review of related

studies which are gathered by the researchers. They also conducted a face-to-face

interview with some respondents whose family is in business. A sum of 100 respondents

from the strand of Accountancy, Business and Management of University of the East

Caloocan were overviewed. The response and the information gathered are counted and

totalled for the researchers to effectively assess the consequence of the overview and to

have the interpretation of the gathered data.

Data Analysis

The researchers used the analysis of variance or ANOVA to analyze the data

gathered from the questionnaires which is a way to test the differences between two or
33

more means. With this, the researchers will be able to determine the effects of business

dynasty in the business progress as well as to know whether a business dynasty is

desirable or not. To present the data, percentages were used to show the data’s

differences and significance. After the data are analyzed, the effects of business dynasty

in the business organization perceived by students are determined.

Slovin’s formula

The participants for this research are one hundred (100) grade 12 students of the

University of the East Caloocan Batch of 2018-2019 under ABM strand which are

selected through simple random sampling. Each student in the population are given an

equal chance to be selected and the researchers used sample sizes for them to represent

the whole group. By using the Slovin’s formula n= N/1+Ne2, the researchers got the

sample size.

N
n=
1+Ne 2

Whereas: N = population

n = sample size

e = margin of error

Statistical Treatment

Likert scale was used by the researchers to assess the effects of business dynasty to

the business progress perceived by the students wherein the scale has four levels: SA-
34

Strongly Agree, A- Agree, D- Disagree, and SD- Strongly Disagree. ANOVA was also

used to measure the significant differences of each group of means and to get the mean,

the researchers used the weighted mean formula:

Weighted mean:

Fx
X=
N

Whereas: X = weighted mean

F = frequency

x = weight of each item

N = number of cases

And by using Percentages, the researchers are able to analyze and present the data

clearly.

Percentages:

F
%= ×100
N

Whereas: % = Percentage

F = frequency

N = number of cases

100 = constant value
