Gantry
The Gantry covers are new. Except for the covers the Gantry is same to the Mx8000 IDT.

Patient Table
The Patient Table covers are new. Except for the covers the Patient Table is same to the Mx8000 IDT.

PDC (Power Distribution Cabinet)

The power distribution cabinet is the same as that of the Mx8000 IDT. The UPS in the Brilliance is a standard
component and not an option.

Cooling System
All Gantry components including the X-ray tube and oil-air heat exchanger are air-cooled. The air inside the Gantry
is cooled by water-air heat exchangers.
The are two cooling systems available for the Gantry:
• Water/water (*)
• Water/air (**)
NOTE * When water/water cooling systems are used, a connection for a ring cooling line or a stand-alone
cooling system should be provided on-site.
If no ring cooling line is present, we recommend using the water/air cooling system.

** When water/air cooling systems are used, one exterior wall with a corresponding outlet to the
outside must be provided.

Brilliance CT Site Planning Room Planning

Typical Room
The room must be at least 2.475cm (8’1") high for the Gantry (see Figure 3-18). The heat exchanger may not be
more than four meters (13' 1") above or below the Gantry.
NOTE For CCT option room height must be min/max 2650 / 3000 mm ( 104.3 / 118.1 in.).
See Section CCT Option Site Planning for full details.
3 3
The minimum room volume for the Water-air heat exchanger is 14.5m (512 ft ).
NOTE Minimum room volume is a safety factor that considers the possibility of coolant evaporation into the
room because of a possible defect in the water-air heat exchanger.
The lower edge of the lead glass window that opens into the clinic must be approximately 80 cm (1’ 1/2") from the
finished floor.
The emergency SHUTDOWN button must comply with local and national fire codes.

Layout
Plan the room so that operators will have the patient in full view. If necessary, install monitoring cameras.
Leave enough space between the wall and each individual unit for servicing the units and to comply with system
cooling and safety requirements.
A separate office and/or viewing room is recommended for the MxView workstation. We also recommend a
separate patient preparation area next to the scan room, for sites that will have heavy traffic.
Because of the high noise level of the fans, we recommend installing the water-air heat exchanger in a separate
control room. The heat exchanger may be to the left or the right of the PDC, or in a different room. Air hose
connections for the water or air heat exchanger must always be connected to an exterior wall.
Figure 3-9, Figure 3-10, and Figure 3-11 show typical layouts with their components.

Maintaining Eye Contact with the Patient and Scan Field

When planning a room, ensure that eye contact with the patient and scan field is maintained. This can be realized
also with video cameras. The observation monitor should be placed close to the operator’s console.

Minimum Distances to Non-System Components (EMC)

To avoid mutual interference between the CT system and, e.g., MR systems, ECG, and EEG workstations, minimum
distances must be maintained (see Electromagnetic Compatibility).

Minimum Distance to the Patient

The following distances from the patient to the heat exchanger and to the PDC must be maintained.

Figure 3-12: Minimum Distance to the Patient

Service and Safety Distances

All indicated distances from walls (e.g., for service and system cooling) must be maintained (see Dimensions of
Units).
Distances from walls to motorized moving parts must be maintained in compliance with national regulations (e.g.,
"Deutsches Maschinenschutzgesetz" - 500 mm).
NOTE The maximum travel of the tabletop with installed headrest/armrest must be observed (see
Dimensions of Units).

Heat Exchangers

Layout for the cooling systems 2

• Due to the high noise level of the fans, we recommend installing the heat exchanger in a separate control room.
• The heat exchangers can be installed to the left or right of the PDC or independent of the PDC in another room.
• The air hose connections for the water/air heat exchanger must always be connected to an exterior wall or to an
air-conditioned room.

Heat Exchanger Height Difference to the Gantry 2

The maximum acceptable height difference between the heat exchanger and the Gantry may not exceed ±4 m.

Types of Heat Exchangers

There are two types of heat exchangers:
• Water-water (shown in Figure 3-20)
• Water-air (shown in Figure 3-21). Allow at least 1 m (3' 3") between cabinet and wall on side where air hose is
connected; allow 10 cm (4") on side with no connection.

Floor Load in the Examination Room (Gantry)

The Gantry with the Patient Table, and the under flooring, must all be installed so that they do not permit any
vibration during scanning.
It is not allowed to install the Gantry directly on installation floors. Remove the installation floor in the area of the
installation support and replace it with a sub-floor construction (see Recommendation for Sub-floor Construction for
Installation Floor).

CAUTION The Gantry with Patient Table and on-site mounting frames must be installed so as to
be free of vibrations.

Measuring the Floor Load Due to the Gantry

The floor loads shown in Table 3-3 were measured as follows:
NOTE Accuracy of measurement is imperative because of the high speeds of rotation of the scanner.
1 Load sensors were positioned at the four measuring
points under the Gantry shown in Figure 3-24.
2 The load was measured at 0° tilt and 0.75 sec. rotation
after the Gantry was stopped by turning the power OFF,
i.e., emergency shutdown.
3 Table 3-3 shows the measured loads for each load point.

CAUTION During installation of the scanning system (Gantry) on concrete or computer flooring,
the weight capacity of each floor plate should be at least 400 kg!
During transportation of the Gantry, the load on individual points may be greater. For
example, three points may support the whole load when the floor is not level.
NOTE The values indicated for floor load are valid only if the Gantry is level.
The static values can deviate about ±10% from the given values in the table.
Always valid for the floor load: FG ≤20000 N

Cooling System Requirements

Primary Circuit Requirements

NOTE There is an ON / OFF switch in the PDC for the activation of external cooling units. The cables to
these units are not supplied by Philips (see Section Switch off in Table Cooling System Water / Water.

Water-Water Heat Exchanger

The Gantry is cooled with water via the heat exchanger. An on-site connection to the chilled water supply of the
hospital must be available for the primary circuit of the heat exchanger. Figure 3-25 shows typical water flow in this
kind of system.

NOTE At water inlet to the primary system, you must install the following (purchased locally):
• Water valve
• Flow meter
• Water temperature gauge

Philips Medical Systems Confidential and Proprietary Information 3 - 33

TM
Brilliance CT Site Planning Room Planning

The chilled water supply of the hospital must meet the following conditions for the primary circuit of a water-water
Heat Exchanger:
• Water Temperature - 2 - 16 °C (35.60 - 60.80°F)
• Switch OFF - An automatic switch-off control system for the water circulation when the CT system is not in use is
integrated in the WCS.
• Water Quality - We recommend water of drinkable quality. With water of lesser quality, a filter must be installed
with a mesh of 0.2 mm in the primary inlet.
• Temperature Gradient - 0.5 K/min (−0.9 °F/min)
• Operating Pressure - Maximum pressure of 10 bar
• Circulating Volume - The minimum circulating volume depends on the temperature of the chilled water as
illustrated in Figure 3-26. If the flow rate from the on-site water supply is insufficient, a pump having the
appropriate power should be installed.
If the circulating volume from the on-site water supply is insufficient, install a pump to bring it to the required level.
• Power output to the on-site chilled water - 15.0 kW
NOTE When upgrading from Mx8000 to Brilliance, all CT system components must be replaced. Existing
mains connections, water connection, and premises can be used.

• Anti-freeze - In locations where the water temperature may fall below the freezing point, add anti-freeze to the
water (primary water circuit only) to provide protection to -20°C (-4°F).
The mixture should be 25% anti-freeze. To compensate for the resulting reduction in cooling capacity, increase
the water flow rate (refer to Figure 3-26).
NOTE Do not add anti-freeze to the secondary water circuit. Add to the primary water circuit only.
• Temperature Deviation - Use the following formula to check the temperature deviation of the water:

15 x (860)
∆t[K] =
(Flowrate)[1/h]

CAUTION Water with anti-freeze from the chiller must be at least +2°C (35.6°F). Water with this
temperature may then flow through the water-water heat exchanger.
• Pressure Drop - The minimum pressure drop required depends on the water circulation. Figure 3-27 illustrates
the relationship between the circulating volume of water and the minimum pressure drop required in the primary
system of the water-water heat exchanger.

• Switch OFF - Switch OFF the circulation of water when the CT system is not in use. Use either a magnetic valve
that is installed on-site or switch OFF the feed pump using a contactor.
The potential-free switching contact in the power distribution system is X263 pin 3,4. Loading capacity maximum
is 277 VAC/2A, or 24 VDC/2A, handling category AC 14/15 and DC12/13.
• Water Quality - We recommend drinking quality water. When water is below drinking quality, install a filter with a
mesh of 0.2 mm (0.01 inches) in the primary inlet.
• Service - The installation of ball valves is recommended for troubleshooting. A temperature indicator for the
primary and secondary circuit and a flow rate indicator is integrated in the WCS.

CAUTION The maximum heat dissipation is:

• At 50Hz—21kW
• At 60HZ—26kW
The WCS Water-air system was designed and tested only according to the specified site-planning described in this
document.

CAUTION If the air intake temperature falls below or exceeds the limits stated, add room air. The
air mixture must be integrated on-site. Provisions for this must be made by the
customer.

install back-draft flaps in the air ducts to prevent ice formation at sub-freezing
temperatures.

Ventilation and Air Filters

For external air supply (fresh air), we recommend that coarse filters, class EU3 to EU4 be used on-site to filter out
dust particles >10 µm.

Required Air Flow Rate 2

The required air flow rate is 4000 m3/h at a total power dissipation of 26.0 kW to the waste air and 40 °C air intake
temperature.
NOTE Total power output = Gantry cooling power + power dissipation of the Heat Exchanger
Nominal values of the ventilator (integrated in the water/air cooling system):
3
• 50 Hz: 4000 m /h
3
• 60 Hz: 4500 m /h
with ∆p=100Pa (internal pressure drop!)

Secondary (Gantry) Cooling Circuit Requirements

The secondary cooling circuit includes secondary cooling circuits in the water-water or water-air cooling systems,
water hoses between the cooling system and the Gantry, the mixing unit in the left leg of the Gantry, and the heat
exchangers in the Gantry.
To make installation easier, we recommend that the following be near the system:
• A water valve with a 3/4" screw connection.
• A unit for water drainage, such as a sink
The quality and pressure of the water in the secondary cooling circuit must meet the following requirements:
• The water in the heat exchanger must be tap water, i.e., drinking water quality. The volume of the water in the
secondary cooling circuit, excluding the hose connections, is approximately 50 liters (13.2 gallons).

Do not add anti-freeze.

• The static fill pressure must be in the range 2 bar±0.2 bar.

The pump in the secondary cooling circuit generates an operating pressure of 5.0 ±1.0 bar at the pump
outlet. This pressure drops within the cooling unit to approximately 2 bar at the pump inlet.

CAUTION Do not operate the pump in the secondary cooling circuit without water in the
system. It will damage the pump.

CAUTION Turn off the power supply to the WCS before filling water. Do not fill the secondary
cooling circuit with water when the power is on.

Environment Requirements

Installation
Figure 3-29 illustrates the ranges in temperature per relative humidity required for operation of the heat exchangers,
i.e., between +5°C and +40°C (+41°F and +104°F) at relative humidity levels between 15 and 85%.
In addition, the barometric pressure must be maintained in the range 70 to 106 kPa, and the environment must be
guaranteed frost-free, i.e., temperatures ≥ 5°C (41°F).

Storage and Transport

• Temperature: -20°C up to +50°C
• Relative Humidity: 10% up to 90% rel. h.
• Atmospheric Pressure: 50–106 kPa
• Comply with the mechanical environment conditions for transport 2M2 according to EN 60721-3-2

Radiation Protection

General
Prior to beginning operation with a CT system, radiation protection zones must be set up and delineated, so that
access and occupational zones are restricted when the X-ray tube is in operation.
DIN 6812 contains the radiation protection guidelines for Germany pertaining to protection from injury resulting from
radiation exposure.
NOTE Adhere to the IEC 60601 and CFR 21 or the corresponding country-specific regulations.

Typical Stray Dose

At 120 kV, for a scan of 1000 mAs, the stray dose on a 10 mm (0.39") slice is 34 µSv, when measured 1.0 m (3.28')
from the beam center with the phantom installed. Measurement is with a cylindrical PMMA 20 cm x18 cm (7.87" x
7.09") phantom, with the phantom centered in the slice plane.
The scattered or stray dose decreases linearly with respect to the slice width.

Minimum Lead Thickness

Walls must be coated with lead to block stray radiation at varying distances from the center of the
phantom. Table 3-4 lists the required minimum lead coating thicknesses required for different zones. These values
are specified in DIN 6812 for CT systems with an operating load of 300,000 mAs per week.

Philips Medical Systems Confidential and Proprietary Information 3 - 41

TM
Brilliance CT Site Planning Room Planning

DIN 6812 defines the zones in Table 3-4 as follows:

• Zone 1 - Areas for occupationally exposed personnel of category A.
• Zone 2 - Areas outside designated controlled areas for occupationally exposed personnel of category B, such as:
dressing rooms, bathrooms, hallways or waiting rooms.
Zone 2 also includes areas outside the building used by the operator, if access to these areas is restricted, and
areas not used by the operator, like mobile X-ray units.
• Zone 3 - Areas in the vicinity of the control room used in connection with the operation of X-ray systems, and
areas outside the building which are used by the operator.
• Zone 4 - All other areas not connected with the operation of X-ray systems, for example, hospital rooms.
In addition, conform to any relevant local regulations.
