Kaagapay sa Karunungan
Scholarship Program Guidelines

I. Purpose

The PNOC Exploration Corporation, through its Kaagapay sa Karunungan manages a


Scholarship Program that provides grants to pay for deserving individuals to attend college
education based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need and utmost interest in
pursuing tertiary education. Through the Scholarship Program, the Company hopes to
contribute in providing life-long opportunities for students and a better-educated workforce for
the community.

II. Scope

The Scholarship Program is available for financially-challenged but deserving individuals


residing within the communities where PNOC EC operates, to study any four-year college
education at any State University or College (SUC)1. This Program covers payment of tuition
and other fees, including a monthly allowance. 2

III. Selection Criteria

PNOC EC is a gender-fair and gender-sensitive company that promotes equal opportunities to


its stakeholders. The Company does not favor any ethnicity, religion, physical ability; and
therefore, it ensures that the scholars will be selected on an objective and non-discriminatory
basis. Below are the criteria for selecting candidates for the Program:

A. General Weighted Average (GWA). The candidate must have a general weighted
average of not lower than 80 per cent (%) in Secondary/High School Education.
B. Pre-qualifying Exam Result. The candidate must take a pre-qualifying examination
to be administered by PNOC EC, and must have a grade of at least 70 points.
C. Financial Status. Priority is given to candidates from low level income households.
The Company reserves the right to assess the financial capacity of the family or
household where the candidate belongs.
D. Demography. The candidate must be a resident of a community where PNOC EC
operates.

State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) refer to any public institution of higher learning that was created by an
Act and passed by the Congress of the Philippines. SUCs are fully funded by the national government.

The amount of monthly allowance will depend on the prevalent scholarship allowance rate and/or the general
outlook of cost of enrolling to SUCs in any given area.
IV. Procedural requirements

A. The candidate must submit the following documents:


 Completely filled-out application form;
 A copy of Birth Certificate or Baptismal Certificate;
 A copy of the most recent Class Report Card (Form 138) or Transcript of Records;
and
 A Certification from the Barangay Captain as proof of residence; or a Certification
from the NCIP-validated Indigenous Peoples’ Organization/Council of Elders
(IPO/COE) concerned (for candidates belonging to a cultural minority). 3
 A signed Memorandum of Understanding (to be provided upon acceptance to the
Program)
B. Together with a parent/guardian, the candidate must participate in the Scholarship
Program orientation on a schedule to be determined by PNOC EC.
C. The candidate must take and pass the pre-qualifying exam composed of (i) Language
Proficiency, (ii) Reading Comprehension, (iii) Mathematics, (iv) Science, (v) Analogy,
and (vi) Essay.

PNOC EC will notify the concerned stakeholders of the schedule of the pre-selection process.
. Late applications will not be accepted. If a candidate misses the deadline, s/he must wait until
the following application year to reapply.

V. Conditions of the Scholarship

Once the candidate has satisfied all the requirements, including the financial capacity
assessment, s/he becomes a PNOC EC Scholar.4 Below are the conditions the scholar must
satisfy to ensure his/her entitlement to the Program:

A. The scholar must maintain a General Weighted Average (GWA) of at least 2.5 or its
equivalent at the end of the semester.5
B. The scholar must not have a failing grade (5.0, 4.0 or INC) in or drop any
subject/course.
C. The scholar may apply to transfer to another degree/course within the first year or to
another SUC, provided the units earned are transferable or can be credited to the new
degree or SUC.
D. The scholar is permitted to undertake part-time paid employment throughout the year,
as long as s/he is able to meet the scholastic/academic requirements of his/her degree.
E. The scholar must remain a resident of the community where PNOC EC operates.

For indigenous cultural communities or ancestral domains with established IPOs or COEs, a certified listing of IP
candidates to the Program may be accepted in lieu of individual certification.

enrollment.

F. The scholar must participate in the Program-related activities, such as Scholarship
Program orientation, annual community service, recognition of scholars program,
review / mentoring sessions, among others.
G. The scholar must volunteer in at least one (1) social development activity of the PNOC
EC per year.

Each scholarship shall be awarded for one academic year and shall be renewed for subsequent
year, provided the scholar continues to meet the conditions of this Program.

VI. Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship payments are given every first week of the month from Monday to Saturday at the
PNOC EC field office. If and when a scholar fails to receive his/her allowance for two (2)
consecutive months, the said allowance will be forfeited. No authorization will be entertained.

VII. Termination of Scholarship Grant

PNOC EC reserves the right to terminate its support to a scholar, if, upon due diligence or
evaluation, the scholar or his/her parent/guardian (as applicable):

A. Fails to fulfill the admission/enrolment requirements, or fails to comply with items A


and B of the Conditions of the Scholarship;
B. Is terminated or expelled from his/her SUC for any reason, or fails to maintain his/her
enrolment;
C. Upon transfer to a new degree/course or SUC, fails to credit at least 80% of the units
earned from the previous degree;
D. Relinquishes the scholarship grant; or
E. Transfers his/her residence outside PNOC EC’s area of operation.
F. Exposing to other people its sentiments, apprehensions and sensitive issues against the
Program and PNOC EC without discussing it first to the concerned office or personnel.
