Release of Backlash Measuring Tools
Body
Tools have been created for the MP800 (MM0263920) and for the MP1000 (MM0263921) to measure
the backlash between the countershaft pinion gear and the eccentric gear.
The figure above shows a Backlash Measuring Tool. The tool is designed to fit over the end of the
counter shaft where it exits the side of the Crusher. The fit of the tool on the shaft is very close so the
end of the shaft, as well as the keyway, must be clean and free of burrs. It also helps to use some
light oil to ease the tool on and off the shaft. The figure above shows that the tool has two lines near
the end of the handle that mark the pinion pitch diameter of spiral bevel pinion gears and straight
bevel pinion gears. The tool is used to measure the circumferential motion, due to the backlash
between the pinion gear and the eccentric gear, at the pinion pitch diameter mark that corresponds
with the type of gear set that was provided with your Crusher. Then compare the amount of
circumferential motion to the allowable range given in the tables below. It is common practice to set
the backlash at the high end of the acceptable range. A displacement gauge can be used to measure
the amount of circumferential motion, measured perpendicular to the surface of the handle directly
above the location of the pinion pitch diameter mark for the type of gear set provided with your
Crusher. If the backlash is less than or greater than the acceptable range, shims must be added or
removed from under the Lower Thrust Bearing. See your Instruction manual for proper procedures for
making this adjustment. If in the process of lowering the eccentric in order to reduce the backlash on
a worn set of gears, the root clearance reaches the minimum limit, the root clearance will then be the
limiting factor to assure that the teeth do not bottom out.
The backlash measuring tool for the MP800 (MM0263920) or the MP1000 (MM0263921) is available
through your local Metso Minerals representative.
