Difference of newspaper writing and radio writing

I. Introduction of the topic

 Writing styles in different type of media have evolved due to the unique nature of each medium.
 The writing style depends on the manner of how the audience consumes content in different
media.

II. Language Used

 Language used in radio news is straight to the point and concise compared to newspaper writing.
In newspaper writing, the writer may include compound and complex sentences whereas in radio
writing it is advisable to make sentences as simple as possible.
 Radio news language is conversational while newspaper news language is formal.

III. Making a Lead Paragraph

 In newspaper writing, the summary lead is usually used wherein the 5Ws and 1 H (What? Who?
Where? When? Why? And How?) is included. The ideal length for the lead in newspaper writing
is 35 words or less. The lead describes the event in the context of an ongoing situation.
 On the other hand, in radio writing only a part of the 5Ws and 1H is usually written. The Why and
How will be usually reserved for the next paragraphs. The lead usually contains the fewest details
that will clearly relate the most significant element of the events being reported.

IV. Writing Structure

 The Inverted Pyramid is significantly being followed in newspaper writing wherein the news
begins with the most important information and the succeeding paragraphs contain details that
are less and less important.
 Most news broadcast in radio are so short that there is time only for a few of the most important
details of a report. Where more time is available, a choice can be made among the inverted
pyramid style, the sequential telling of an event, or a combination of the two, starting with the
important details.

V. Word choice

 Proper grammatical usage such as correct punctuation and accurate spelling are crucial and
essential in newspaper writing while in radio writing, pronunciation and communication matters
even more. That’s the reason why words and names that are more likely to be mispronounced
are printed orthographically and phonetically.
 Since a news writer in a newspaper should posses a large vocabulary, the choice of the right word
means the difference between accuracy and almost accuracy. A radio writer on the other hand,
limits themselves to a simple and widely understood words and is able to translate complexities
into simplicities.
